Job Overview: A law firm specializing in intellectual property law is seeking a highly qualified Biotech-Life Science Patent Prosecution Patent Agent or Scientist to join their team in San Diego, CA. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional academic credentials, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and a passion for biotechnology and life sciences.

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications for biotechnology, life sciences, and pharmaceutical inventions.
  • Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate searches and analyses.
  • Provide strategic intellectual property counseling to biotech and life sciences clients.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and clients to develop patent strategies aligned with business objectives.
  • Analyze scientific publications and technical documents to support patent prosecution efforts.
  • Conduct due diligence investigations related to patent portfolio evaluations and licensing agreements.
  • Prepare legal opinions and responses to patent office actions.

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree (. preferred) in biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, cellular/molecular biology, molecular genetics, microbiology, or a comparable field.
  • 2+ years of experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications for life sciences, biotech, or pharmaceutical inventions.
  • Experience in biotech commercialization, such as university tech transfer or industry commercialization/regulatory compliance, is preferred.
  • Ability to apply scientific expertise with commercial and legal considerations to understand clients' commercialization goals.
  • Excellent oral presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to work independently and remotely to support supervising attorneys across multiple offices.
  • Previous experience in a law firm or industry setting and current admission to the USPTO is required.

Education and Certifications:

  • Advanced degree (. preferred) in biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, cellular/molecular biology, molecular genetics, microbiology, or a comparable field.
  • Admission to the USPTO is required.

  • Strong understanding of biotechnology and life sciences principles and technologies.
  • Proficiency in conducting patent searches and analyses.
