Department of the Interior's Office of the Solicitor is seeking talented and dedicated law students for its Legal Internship Program. With nearly 200 practicing attorneys in the headquarters office and over 300 attorneys nationwide, the Office is responsible for the legal work of DOI, the Nation's premier conservation agency. This internship program offers law students the opportunity to gain practical experience in advising agencies on the legal aspects of their mission and participating in complex civil litigation before administrative tribunals or federal courts. Semester and Eligibility Information The Legal Internship Program is open to 1L, 2L, and 3L students. Students must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited law school and in good academic standing. Public policy graduate students and law school graduates enrolled in graduate law programs are also eligible to apply. Native American candidates are strongly encouraged to apply as the Office has unique responsibilities to support the Department's programs benefiting American Indians and Alaska Natives. Salary Information The internship positions are without compensation, but students are eligible to participate in the Transit Subsidy Benefit Program. Responsibilities and Opportunities Legal interns/externs will have the opportunity to conduct legal research on a variety of environmental and administrative law issues, as well as issues involving Indian law. They will also assist with drafting legal memoranda, briefs, and motions, as well as participating in discovery in active federal cases. There may also be opportunities to attend hearings and meetings in the Washington, . area. Interns will work closely with other agency counsel, including Justice Department lawyers and agency officials, and gain valuable experience in the legal field.
