Salary information:
• USD $124,800 - $222,000 per year (typical base pay range across the .)
• USD $159,000 - $238,600 per year (base pay range in San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area)

Job Overview:
• As Principal Corporate Counsel, you will be a part of Microsoft’s Open Source, Standards, Open ML & Data (OSSOM) team, focused on data usage for AI training.
• This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to Microsoft’s commitment to open ecosystems while navigating the current AI revolution.
• You will be responsible for advising on data rights, privacy, and governance related to AI training, as well as engaging in policy decisions and representing Microsoft in relevant open ecosystem foundations and communities.
• Your collaboration with experts across the company will also involve issues such as patents, copyright, and software licensing.

Qualifications:
• Juris Doctorate Degree or Equivalent International Degree, or completion of a Legal Apprenticeship
• Active license to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction
• 5+ years of experience as a practicing attorney with a focus on data rights, privacy, and governance related to AI training, or equivalent practice of law
• Experience with patents, copyright, software licensing, and technology transactions
• Strong negotiation and diplomatic skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively across diverse groups and communities
• Bias for action and driving client-focused results

Responsibilities:
• Partnering with engineering to drive the legal engine behind Microsoft’s responsible data use for AI training at scale
• Advising and coaching clients on data usage, AI training, open source AI, open source, standards, and software licensing
• Being a thought leader in the areas of data, open source AI, open source, and standards, both internally and externally
• Representing Microsoft in relevant open ecosystem foundations, committees, and communities
• Collaborating with experts across the company on issues such as patents, copyright, privacy, antitrust, trade, and corporate law
• Embodying Microsoft’s culture and values.
