JOB DESCRIPTION: Assistant Attorney General - Public Utilities The Utah Attorney General’s Office, Highways and Utilities Division, has an immediate opening for an attorney to represent the Department of Commerce, Division of Public Utilities. This position principally involves analyzing and litigating regulatory matters before the Utah Public Service Commission. A background in economics, finance, accounting, or business is preferred. Some experience with public utility regulation, FERC litigation, complex commercial litigation, or substantially similar complex litigation is highly desirable. Must have experience showing ability to work collaboratively as well as independently. Current membership in the Utah State Bar is required. *This position will be open until filled. The next review of applications will begin on 12/02/2022.* EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Prepares cases by conducting legal research, preparing witnesses, and gathering evidence. Provides consultation, makes recommendations, gives appropriate advice, and/or facilitates decisions. Drafts, reviews, and recommends contract language. Determine needs in discovery, and/or completes discovery; participates in decision making and strategy sessions in preparing cases for court and determining evidence to be used. Writes or drafts correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials. Receives, researches and responds to incoming questions or complaints; provides information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution. Represents the state or the employing agency in lawsuits, grievances, and complaints. Drafts litigation working documents; prepares documents consisting of concise decisions based upon facts of case interpretations of law and compliance with state and federal standards. Conduct conferences with defendants and/or attorneys and negotiate settlements. Represents clients at formal or informal hearings. May be required to travel to various locations and stay overnight.
