The . Department of the Interior (DOI) is seeking talented and dedicated law students for their Legal Internship Program. The program offers practical experience in advising agencies on legal aspects of their mission, participating in complex civil litigation, and resolving appeals under the Freedom of Information Act.

With nearly 200 practicing attorneys in the headquarters office and over 300 attorneys nationwide, the Office of the Solicitor is responsible for the legal work of DOI. As the Nation's premier conservation agency, DOI's mission has a significant impact on the lives of millions of people, from families taking vacations in national parks to children studying in Indian schools.

As a legal intern/extern, you will have the opportunity to conduct legal research on a variety of environmental and administrative law issues, as well as issues involving Indian law. You will also have the chance to draft legal memoranda, briefs, and motions, and assist with discovery in active federal cases. Additionally, you may participate in conference calls and strategy sessions with other agency counsel, including Justice Department lawyers and agency officials. There may also be opportunities to attend hearings and meetings in the Washington, . area.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must be students in good academic standing. First-year, first-semester law students may apply after December 1 for internships the following summer.

To apply, interested students should submit a resume with two professional or academic references, a completed Request for Consideration form, a cover letter, a copy of their most recent transcript, and a writing sample. The Legal Internship Program is available during the summer semester for 2L and 3L students. The internship is unpaid, but interns are eligible to participate in the Transit Subsidy Benefit Program.
