# Law Student Volunteer, Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section, Criminal Division (CRM)

## Overview
The Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section (MLARS) of the United States Department of Justice, Criminal Division (CRM) leads the Department's asset forfeiture and anti-money laundering enforcement efforts. MLARS provides leadership by:

* Prosecuting and coordinating complex, sensitive, multi-district, and international money laundering and asset forfeiture investigations and cases
* Providing legal and policy assistance and training to federal, state, and local prosecutors and law enforcement personnel, as well as to foreign governments
* Assisting Departmental and interagency policymakers by developing and reviewing legislative, regulatory, and policy initiatives
* Managing the Department's Asset Forfeiture Program, including distributing forfeited funds and properties to appropriate domestic and foreign law enforcement agencies and to community groups within the United States, as well as adjudicating petitions for remission or mitigation of forfeited assets

## Job Description
Law student volunteers work directly with MLARS' trial attorneys on cutting-edge issues relating to cases involving domestic and international asset forfeiture, money laundering, kleptocracy, and criminal violations of the Bank Secrecy Act and IEEPA. Assignments vary and may include legal research, drafting pleadings and motions, analyzing policy issues, and drafting section publications. Law student volunteers may also participate in local section-sponsored training, as well as training programs offered by the Department for volunteers.

## Qualifications
Applicants must be in their first year of law school (second semester) or beyond. Applicants should have:

* A strong academic background
* Excellent research, writing, and communication skills
* A strong interest in criminal law, particularly in the areas of asset forfeiture, money laundering, or financial investigations

Because of the sensitive nature of the work, applicants must pass a background check before a formal offer for an internship can be extended.

Law student volunteers must work a minimum of 8 weeks (10 weeks preferred), full-time or part-time (at least 20 hours/week).

Volunteer (without compensation). Academic or work-study credit possible.
