A law firm located in East Palo Alto is seeking a Patent Agent with a background in molecular biology to join its Intellectual Property and Technology Practice Group, specifically the Patent Development and Strategy Subgroup. The ideal candidate should possess transferable skills, a strong academic background from nationally recognized schools, and prior experience in a large or mid-sized law firm. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in life sciences, particularly biotechnology, and a PhD in molecular and cellular biology or similar disciplines. Registration with the USPTO is required, and litigation, opinions, licensing, patent due diligence, and/or trademark experience are preferred.

 

Duties:

  • Conducting patentability searches and analyses in molecular biology and related fields
  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the biotechnology sector
  • Assisting attorneys in patent litigation matters related to molecular biology
  • Providing opinions and advice on patent issues, including infringement and validity analyses
  • Participating in patent licensing negotiations and agreements
  • Conducting patent due diligence investigations for corporate transactions
  • Conducting trademark searches and assisting with trademark prosecution, if necessary

 

Requirements:

  • Transferable skills and strong academic background from nationally recognized schools
  • 2-5 years of experience in a large or mid-sized law firm
  • Background in life sciences, particularly biotechnology
  • Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • Advanced degree, preferably a PhD, in molecular and cellular biology or similar disciplines (excluding chemistry, medical device, or pharmaceutical sciences)
  • Experience with patent litigation, opinions, licensing, patent due diligence, and/or trademarks is preferred

 

Education:

Bachelor's or advanced degree in molecular biology or a related field

 

Certifications:

Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

 

Skills:

  • Proficiency in conducting patentability searches and analyses
  • Strong drafting and prosecution skills for patent applications
  • Knowledge of patent litigation procedures and strategies
