In 2009, Fortune magazine in its article mentioned Bingham McCutchen as the 30th best company to work for. Bingham McCutchen came up on this list for the fifth consecutive year. Similar honors were bestowed upon this firm by a various other publications including the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Business Journal, Washington Business Journal, and the Boston Business Journal. The company is on a sharp growth curve since 1997. The firm has grown in the number of attorneys, offices, and revenues on its way forward and has absorbed other law firm as well. Its offices are concentrated in the California and East Coast Areas. The firm also offers a diverse range of consulting services through its subsidiaries the Bingham Consulting Group and Bingham Strategic Advisors. Bingham McCutchen has its roots in the old-line Boston based firm Bingham, Dana & Gould. Since the 1990's the firm embraced a growth strategy transforming it to a national and then an internationally successful firm. Prior to that, Bingham was a regional heavy weight, especially in the Boston area. In 1997, the firm acquired an international focused firm Marks and Murase along with its entire list of Japanese clients. It also opened office in New York City along with a 25-member lawyer team from Marks. The firm also established an office in Hartford, Connecticut through a merger with Hebb & Giltin, which had a 55-lawyer team. This firm concentrated on international bankruptcy work. In this, manner the firm took to several mergers and acquisitions and finally emerged as 800 lawyer strong Bingham McCutchen. The year 2003 saw the firm expanding in Southern California. Shortly after, in 2006, a Washington DC firm - Swidler Berlin Sheriff Friedman merged with Bingham McCutchen, giving it greater abilities in the nation's capital. The firm also launched in Hong Kong in the same year. The following years saw more mergers especially with two Tokyo based firms to build a strong US presence in Japan. The July 2009 firm acquired McKee Nelson, which was a midsize firm that specialized in tax law as well as structured finance.
