Health Care Attorney Job Description

'A health care attorney deals with laws and regulations that relate to the health care field. The legal practice of a health care attorney is interdisciplinary and focuses on the various entities that comprise the world of heath care, such as hospitals, doctors, long-term care facilities, medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and medical transportation companies. Health care lawyers represent these entities in a host of matters, including complying with health care laws and regulations, obtaining financing for construction of new health care facilities, and dealing with health care fraud and insurance reimbursement issues. Health care attorneys often have medical backgrounds, such as being former doctors, nurses or hospital administrators.

Health Care Associate


The candidate should have 2-5 years of legal experience. Must have relevant healthcare regulatory and/or corporate work experience, including prior experience with hospitals, managed care plans, Medicare and Medicaid, and federal and state healthcare regulatory issues. Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-approved law school and be an active member in good standing of the Bar.

Junior Health Care Associate

The candidate focuses on various regulatory and compliance issues, fraud and abuse, and reimbursement, including licensing, the Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback Statute, HIPAA/HITECH and Medicare/Medicaid. Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-approved law school and be an active member in good standing of the Bar. Should have 2-4 years of health law experience (whether in-house, government or law firm) and have a particular interest and aptitude in regulatory and compliance issues.

Health Care Associate

The candidate should have 3 - 6 years of health law experience with particular strength in transactional work, regulatory due diligence, and contracting. Must have knowledge of the general federal and state health care regulatory schemes and preferably also would have significant experience with Massachusetts health law issues, including knowledge of the Stark law, the Anti-Kickback statute, HIPAA/HITECH Act, Medicare conditions of participation, licensing, and reimbursement. Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-approved law school and be an active member in good standing of the Bar.

Health Care Associate

The candidate should bring a depth of experience in Anti-Kickback and Stark law, HIPAA, and physician and other healthcare contracting, as well as knowledge of the Affordable Care Act and its implications in the industry. Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-approved law school and be an active member in good standing of the Bar.

Junior Health Care Associate

The candidate focuses on various regulatory and compliance issues, fraud and abuse, and reimbursement, including licensing, the Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback Statute, HIPAA/HITECH and Medicare/Medicaid. Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-approved law school and be an active member in good standing of the Bar. Should have 2-4 years of health law experience (whether in-house, government or law firm) and have a particular interest and aptitude in regulatory and compliance issues.

Associate - Health Care And Life Sciences Regulatory

The candidate should have 3-5 years of significant experience representing health care and life sciences companies, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, and health care providers in corporate and regulatory matters. Must have experience advising companies regarding compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, federal and state fraud and abuse laws, and health care related data privacy and security laws. Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-approved law school and be an active member in good standing of the Bar.

Health Care Regulatory Associate

The candidate should have experience in federal fraud and abuse laws (i.e., Stark and Anti-Kickback Laws) regarding arrangements involving hospitals, physicians, and other health care providers; and should also be able to navigate state kickback and self-referral prohibitions, corporate practice of medicine, certificate of need and licensure regulations and nonprofit/tax-exemption issues. Additional familiarity/experience/exposure to Medicare and Medicaid regulations, and any health-reform related initiatives (such as ACOs, medical homes, bundled payment programs); as well as corporate and transactional experience working with health care providers, such as, mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, affiliations, MSOs, IPAs, PHOs and other contractual matters, including professional services, recruitment and employment agreements will be required. Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-approved law school and be an active member in good standing of the Bar.
