Discover the Excitement of Working at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs Welcome to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), a public agency dedicated to improving the well-being of Native Hawaiians. With a high degree of autonomy, OHA is governed by a Board of Trustees, elected statewide, who set policies for the agency. Under the guidance of a Chief Executive Officer, OHA's dedicated staff of about 170 people work tirelessly to enhance the lives of Native Hawaiians and strengthen our community's resources. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs understands the importance of education and believes in investing in the future of Native Hawaiian students. Annually, OHA provides over $800,000 in scholarship money to support Native Hawaiian students in their pursuit of higher education. By alleviating the financial burden, OHA empowers these students to focus on their studies and achieve their academic goals. In addition to educational support, OHA plays a crucial role in fostering economic growth within the Native Hawaiian community. Over the past decade, OHA has distributed more than $34 million in loans to help Native Hawaiians start businesses, improve their homes, consolidate debts, and continue their education. By providing financial assistance, OHA empowers individuals to create sustainable businesses, improve their living conditions, and pursue lifelong learning. OHA's commitment to the Native Hawaiian community extends beyond individual support. The agency has awarded an estimated $16 million to various organizations that aid Hawaiians, including Hawaiian-focused charter schools, Papa Ola Lōkahi, and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands. By collaborating with these organizations, OHA strengthens the resources available to Native Hawaiians, ensuring their cultural heritage and traditions thrive for generations to come. One of OHA's notable achievements is the successful advocacy for the restoration of the Nā Wai ʻEhā streams. After a century of being diverted, these vital waterways are flowing once again, thanks to the efforts of community leaders and OHA's expert legal team. This landmark achievement sets an important precedent for stream restoration across the Hawaiian islands, supporting Hawaiian lifestyles, stream and ocean life, and the aquifers that provide drinking water for all. Working at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of Native Hawaiians. As a staff member, you become part of a dedicated team that collaborates with various organizations to strengthen our community's resources. Whether it's providing scholarships to aspiring students, supporting entrepreneurs, or advocating for important causes, your work at OHA directly contributes to the well-being of Native Hawaiians. Join the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and be a part of an organization that values the preservation of Hawaiian culture, supports educational aspirations, and promotes economic growth within the Native Hawaiian community. Together, we can create a brighter future for Native Hawaiians and ensure the vitality of our unique and vibrant culture.
