LawCrossing Reports Huge Number of Legal Jobs on its Portal, Questioning Jobseekers’ Insecurity
October 01, 2013
Pasadena, CA - Recently Charles Weisselberg, UC Berkeley Law Professor and Associate Dean, commented that he did not think a law school was the refuge it was 20 years ago for liberal art students still uncertain of which career path to take. This was quoted in the article "Law schools at a crossroads: Weak job prospects, high tuition causing fewer to apply," released by Inside Bay Area News on 27 September. The observation could be related to many fluctuations taking place in the legal job market. But even with jobs seeming to have dipped again in the legal sector, LawCrossing reports over 9,630 legal staff jobs, about 21,700 attorney jobs, over 400 law student jobs, 6,788 paralegal jobs, 553 judicial clerkship jobs, above 11,590 in-house attorney jobs, 1,425 government attorney jobs and over 2350 legal secretary jobs. So, should jobseekers be insecure then?

Job figures on LawCrossing still hold true to the prediction made for lawyers as well as paralegals and legal assistants in the Occupational Outlook Handbook: 2012-13 edition by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Quite surprisingly, it has been observed that big firms are not taking part in the legal industry's jobs upswing. For instance in January, Blank Rome LLP closed its document services department in Washington D.C. and Seattle leading to elimination of 24 to 30 support positions. Staff reduction has become a growing trend in big law firms, with every firm having different reasons to make those cuts. For some it is the increasing use of technology making legal staff redundant, while for others it's simply the fact that they had over hired in the past and want to make their teams leaner now. On the hindsight, small law firms are bracing up the legal jobs market and creating new hope.
