Law students get offers for unpaid summer associates while LawCrossing finds 1,300 positions for them.

Pasadena, CA — In a sign of the tough job market for new lawyers, law firms in Florida are requesting law schools to send in their students to work as unpaid summer associates. The ABA reports that most of the requests came from small and midsized law firms. The ABA states that the schools refused to post the requests and instead directed these law firms to the federal regulations on unpaid labor. Although federal law says that unpaid interns should not be worked for direct profit by the employer, some law students are willing to work for free just to get the experience and put it on their resume. There's a report out of Georgetown Law that for its students, Haynes and Boone, LLP has cancelled their summer program for its Washington DC and Austin branches. The firm is instead offering its short listed candidates a chance to work at either of these branches — Dallas, Houston, or New York. Although stories about law students finding it difficult to land summer associate positions or new graduates being out of work are getting common, LawCrossing has been able to compile a list of almost 1,300 positions for the summer associates position.
