Law Firms Continue Shedding Jobs; LawCrossing Continues Adding More
November 14, 2008
Pasadena, CA — As more and more law firms now adjust to the global economic climate, they have switched to the most common method of cutting cost — reducing staff size. Recently, the white-shoe international firm, White & Case followed suit by announcing a 3% reduction in its legal and non-legal headcount worldwide. Meanwhile, LawCrossing added more than 13,000 legal jobs in last week itself. “LawCrossing is a silver lining to all this doom and gloom,” says Harrison Barnes, CEO of LawCrossing.

New York-based White & Case says the layoffs will include around 90 staffers and 70 associates. The firm felt the action as necessary in the current economic downturn. The firm’s statement also said the cuts were based on a decline in attrition rates. “The toll may seem small in comparison to other layoffs in the news, but it adds to the rising number of layoffs within the legal community,” adds Barnes.

According to Barnes, some of the hardest hit legal practice areas have been corporate finance, real estate, securitizations, and leveraged buyouts. Meanwhile, bankruptcy and employment litigation practice areas are expected to receive boom, while others like intellectual property, energy, and healthcare should remain the same. Regionally, New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Washington, DC, have been some of the worst affected cities for the legal industry.

Additionally, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics released the latest employment figures, which reported that the legal services sector lost 1,100 jobs in October, a decrease of 1.1% from October 2007. The industry now employs 1.16 million people, which reflect not just attorneys, but also public relations representatives, paralegals, legal secretaries, and more. “These figures speak the losses felt in the legal sector from closures/layoffs at firms such as Heller Ehrman, Thelen, Clifford Chance , Katen, Muchin Rosenman, Jenner & Block, and others,” adds Barnes.

LawCrossing offers 140,000-plus legal jobs to attorneys, law students, paralegals, and other legal staff. “LawCrossing members often ask how the website manages to add such humongous job numbers. It’s possible only through intensive research of every job from every possible source,” says Barnes. “We have a huge research team that daily monitors over 250,000 employer websites, 8,000 job boards, every newspaper classified, every publication, and every other possible resource. Only with such dedicated and passionate research are we able to bring in such huge numbers,” adds Barnes.
