LawCrossing Reports Growth in Law Firm Jobs and In-House Positions Across the U.S. in May 2007

Pasadena, Calif. — Employment in the legal sector enjoyed strong grow throughout April, as the number of in-house positions and law firm jobs increased steadily across most of the country, as indicated in the latest report by LawCrossing, the world's largest legal career placement website. The most recent figures gathered by LawCrossing show that the private legal sector is continuing to experience strong growth in 2007. Law firms from every region of the country had an increase in the number of jobs in April, bringing the total number of positions to 13,657. This marks an increase of 1,071 more available law firm jobs compared to the previous month. The Northeast region of the U.S. had the largest growth, with 2,944 positions offered in April, an increase of 296 more law firm jobs than were offered in March. There was also an increase in the number of law firm positions available in the South, which had 2,472 available positions, and in the West, which had a total of 3,687 jobs in April. According to LawCrossing, the number of in-house positions rose steadily to 7,979 jobs offered last month. With the exception of the West, which had a decrease of only eight positions, every region in the U.S. increased the number of available in-house jobs. With a total of 539 positions, the Southwest had the largest increase in available in-house jobs. April's overall growth is a significant improvement from the sharp decrease shown in March. LawCrossing also reports that despite the decline in the total number of public sector positions offered in April, the South, West, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast regions of the U.S. all showed increases in the number of available government jobs. The Mid-Atlantic had the highest increase, with 348 public sector positions. Overall, the number of government positions across the country totaled 1,917 in April, marking a decrease of just 37 fewer jobs than were offered in March. Other numbers compiled by LawCrossing show growth in legal staff positions, including paralegals, which had 12,632 available jobs, and technical specialists. Legal staff jobs in accounting and human resources showed no change, while the number of positions for legal secretaries declined from 13,097 positions in March, to 12,502 in April.
