LawCrossing: Job Growth Continues to Prosper in the Legal Community
February 19, 2007
According to the latest report by LawCrossing, the world's largest legal career-placement website, the month of February has continued to show steady growth in terms of the number of positions in the legal community.

So far, 2007 is turning out to be a solid year for the private sector, as the number of positions continues to grow with the additions of many new legal jobs. Unfortunately, government work took a major hit in the month of February.

The numbers of legal positions within all government sectors decreased, with some exceptions in the Southwest. However, overall, the market is very strong and vibrant, with many new positions being listed across the country. The number of paralegal positions increased by 482. For legal secretaries, 484 new positions were added. The total number of technical-specialist positions increased by 25, and the number of legal-administrator positions increased by a scanty 3 jobs.

In a comparison with last month's data, the number of law firm jobs increased in the Northeast from 2,380 in January to 2,658 this month. The Northeast also showed growth in terms of its number of in-house positions, but the region showed a loss of nine jobs in the government sector. The Mid-Atlantic region showed an increase of 149 law firm jobs as well as an increase of 50 in-house jobs. The region lost a total of 26 government jobs.

The South showed an increase of 81 law firm positions and an increase of 52 in-house positions. The government sector took a large hit; it lost 137 government positions. The Midwest added 147 law firm jobs and 80 in-house jobs. The number of government positions declined in the Midwest by 32.

In the Southwest region, the number of law firm positions was up by 27, with an increase of 28 in-house positions and a modest increase of six government jobs. The number of jobs in the West increased sharply, with 279 new law firm positions being filled during the month of February. The number of in-house positions in this region increased by 86. The number of government positions decreased by a nominal margin of nine jobs.

"Aside from the government sector, the market is doing very well and the economy continues to sustain. We acknowledge that but caution anyone in the market to use a professional to help find the best position. At LawCrossing, we are experts in our field and can find anyone the right position regardless of the trends," stated Harrison Barnes, CEO of LawCrossing.

LawCrossing's team of 200 researchers and editorial staff monitors the hiring trends of more than 1 million legal employers. With more than 50,000 U.S. legal jobs in its database, LawCrossing counts tens of thousands of law students, attorneys, and legal staff professionals as members.
