Fall Recruitment Every fall, O’Melveny visits law schools across the country for on-campus interviews, in addition to participating in a variety of career fairs. You can also contact any of our offices directly regarding summer associate opportunities. Please send your resume and transcript to the contact in your office of interest listed on the Hiring Contacts page. Fall Recruitment Overview O’Melveny recruits most of its entry-level attorneys through our summer program. Callback Interviews During callback interviews, attorneys will be interested in learning more about you as an individual and discover your strengths and attributes. Students invited for this second round of interviews should expect to spend two to three hours meeting with attorneys of various levels and members from the legal recruiting department. Travel and Accommodations O’Melveny assists candidates with hotel and airfare arrangements to attend callback interviews. O’Melveny will share travel expenses with other firms at which a candidate is interviewing on the same trip. Hiring Decisions Offers are made in consultation with the office’s Employment Committee. You will be notified as soon as possible following your callback visit. The Summer Experience We have one of the most innovative talent development programs in the country and we are committed to providing summer associates with a realistic experience of what it's like to practice law in an environment that has been described as an "exceptional place to practice.†After working with the Firm's attorneys on serious assignments for real clients, you will appreciate that being a lawyer is hard work, but we anticipate you will also discover it is one of the most rewarding careers you can choose. Our lawyers are consistently described as "genuinely friendly," "collegial," and "interesting." This is no accident. We make a concerted effort to recruit well-rounded individuals who have lives outside the office. Each office sponsors a variety of social events to create camaraderie among our summer associates and to give them an opportunity to get to know other lawyers outside the office setting. Our 2014 summer associate class participated in many events including baseball games, golf outings, wine tastings, cooking classes, dinners at partners' homes, concerts, and museum trips, to name a few. Some other highlights have included a private tour of the US Supreme Court, surfing lessons, trapeze school, rock climbing, a baseball game at Yankee Stadium, and a river rafting excursion. Summer Program Basics O'Melveny's summer program provides those considering a career in law with a realistic view of what it is actually like to practice, and most importantly, what it is like to practice at O’Melveny. Our summer associates benefit from many of the same structures and tools we have put in place to benefit our lawyers, such as substantive training, and individual support and guidance. Summer Program Information Commitment: We require our summer associates to spend at least the first eight weeks of the summer with us and we hope you'll stay longer. Billable Hours: Our summer associates are not required to bill a minimum number of hours, but we do ask you to keep track of your time. Orientation: Our summer associates learn how to handle assignments, how to navigate a large corporate environment, and how to best utilize their assistant. Work Assignment Process: Our summer associates receive assignments through a process similar to our associate and counsel work coordination system. This system allows you to experience a variety of practice areas, including pro bono work. Projects will include the potential for summer associates to experience part of the range of activities in a case or transaction, including but not limited to research, internal and external meetings, hearings, depositions, conference calls, document drafting and negotiation sessions. Mentoring: Each summer associate is assigned a mentor who can answer questions and provide guidance throughout the summer. Feedback: We know summer associates desire and value feedback, so we strive to ensure that the lawyers you work with evaluate each of your projects. Summer associates also receive a mid-summer review to discuss formal evaluations and experience at the firm. Social Events: The people and the work are what make O’Melveny a special place. Social activities range from cooking classes, baseball games, and dinners at partners' homes, to small group happy hours and informal lunches on a regular basis. Technology: Summer associates have access to a Blackberry, a laptop computer with Microsoft Outlook e-mail and remote access, our document management system, the Internet, and our Firm intranet, OMMNI. Support: Each summer associate is assigned an assistant who also works with other lawyers and legal assistants. Hiring Contacts O'Melveny recruits on-campus at law schools across the country and we are also actively involved in year-round campus outreach. If you are interested in applying to our Firm and we do not recruit at your law school, please send your resume, law school transcripts, and a cover letter to the main recruiting contact for your office of interest.
