Attorney Duties: Analyze medical records. Communicate with claims representatives and employer representatives. Take depositions of the claimant, physicians, medical experts, witnesses and other parties. Conduct discovery. Perform legal research. Remain current with developments in the law. Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, opinions and other legal documents. Litigate cases before workers' compensation judges and appellate courts. Negotiate settlements on behalf of the client. Represent the interests of the employer or insurer at hearings, trials, depositions, oral arguments, mediations, arbitrations and other proceedings. Assist with the investigation of accidents. Manage claim costs to reduce liability. Compile and submit reports required by company management. Coordinate and attend claims reviews. Participate in business/client development and provide training to clients. Mentor less experienced attorneys. Supervise assigned staff.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Undergraduate degree, JD Degree from an accredited law school, and a license to practice law from the state Bar Association. Litigation experience and strong trial experience. Expert knowledge of workers' compensation laws and procedures. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong research and analytical skills. Ability to handle large caseloads and manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Ability to budget client costs and calculate exposure. Excellent negotiation skills. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Strong technology skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office software and legal research platforms such as Lexis and Westlaw. Understanding of medical, scientific, construction, products, engineering and similar issues inherent in workers compensation cases. Familiarity of claims handling guidelines for each business unit. Knowledge of billing and reporting procedures.
