For Spring semester Washington, D.C. Internships: Internships with Congressman McCarthy Thank you for your interest in serving as an intern in my congressional office. I am pleased to offer students this unique educational opportunity to participate in the legislative branch of government. The internship program is designed to provide students with an understanding of the core functions of a congressional office, including responding to constituent inquiries, researching legislation, developing public policy, and observing the legislative process firsthand by attending committee meetings, hearings, and a variety of lecture series. Internships are available year round in my Washington, D.C. office and Bakersfield, California district office. Summer Internships. The Summer Intern Program for residents of California's 22nd Congressional District is generally a 6-week session; interns typically spend 2 weeks in my Bakersfield District office followed by 4 weeks in my Washington, DC office. Summer Intern Program participants are responsible for their own travel and transportation costs and will receive a $1500 stipend. Applicants must have at least junior standing in college and a minimum 3.0 Grade Point Average. In addition to the formal Summer Intern Program, other summer internships may be available in my Washington, D.C. and Bakersfield offices. While preference is given to constituents of California's 22nd Congressional District for internships, all interested applicants are encouraged to apply and will be considered. Deadline: Applications for 2009 summer intern positions must be received by April 15, 2009. Click here to view our video about internships Here's what some 2008 Summer Interns say about their experience: "Since participating in Congressman McCarthy's summer intern program, I have developed an even greater passion for politics and a better sense of what I would like to pursue in the future. Congressman McCarthy's office provided me with countless opportunities to become involved in what specifically interested me and encouraged my participation in those events. His staff is unbelievable as well; I would go back in a heartbeat." - Kate Bianchi "Interning for Congressman McCarthy during the Summer of 2008 was the best experience of my life. I grew more as a professional and an individual than any other time in my college career. The lessons that I learned about the legislative process were priceless and timeless. My favorite aspect of the internship was the day that I got a chance to shadow Congressman McCarthy, because on this day I got a small taste of the busy day he has, and how much he cares about his constituents." - Cecilia Jelmini "Working for Congressman McCarthy was a great summer experience. The internship in D.C. helped me better understand the inner-workings of the Federal government by providing a hands-on experience with researching legislation, working closely with the Congressman and staff for Committee, and leading constituent tours of the Capitol Building. I recommend this experience to anyone who has an interest in government, political science, or politics. Interning with Congressman McCarthy's office has helped me better decide what I want to pursue after graduation by providing a one-of-a-kind work experience along with genuine knowledge and advice." - Mike Melzer Fall, Winter and Spring Internships. College students with a minimum 3.0 Grade Point Average may apply for internships during the fall, winter or spring semesters/quarters.
