Practice Development Specialist (Mergers & Acquisitions) Duties: Plays an essential role in Ropes & Gray’s business strategy. Will support the Practice Development Manager (PDM) and Practice Group Leaders in the management of the Mergers and Acquisitions practice group including: providing marketing, business development, lateral partner integration and other business and logistical support critical to its day-to-day operations and long-term growth. Will contribute to the overall success of the practice group by helping to implement practice group strategy and the overall firm strategy. Will coordinate attorneys, professional staff and various task force groups on a variety of cross-office, cross-practice or firm strategic initiatives and act as a liaison to administrative functions relating to the practice group’s support needs. Work closely with the PDM, Practice Group Leaders, attorneys and other internal firm resources to develop and implement practice group strategic plans and individual partners’ business plans, including by coordinating a variety of short- and long-term business development and marketing initiatives within the practice group, across practice groups and offices, and client-specific. Support practice group marketing and business development efforts by coordinating, preparing and tracking pitches and proposals, responses to RFPs, client presentations and other deliverables, working with the Creative and Proposals teams. Work with the PDM to create and maintain marketing materials and collateral, coordinating with the Creative and Proposals teams. Help identify, assess and coordinate industry visibility and externally focused activities (working closely with the firm’s Events, Creative and PR teams), including: sponsorships, speaking engagements and conference attendance; charitable donations; and webinars and client events. Assist the PDM, Practice Group Leaders and partners in conducting research and gathering and analyzing practice group, industry, competitive and client-specific data to inform and support business development and marketing initiatives. Coordinate and prepare legal ranking submissions and league tables, including working with the PDM and Practice Group Leaders to determine the rankings strategy for each submission, drafting and finalizing submissions and tracking submission information from year to year (as applicable). Assist the PDM and Practice Group Leaders with the onboarding and integration of lateral partners and counsel into the practice group, including helping to draft sponsor memoranda, prepare and execute integration plans and track progress of same. Maintain internal practice group data and resources, such as client lists, experience lists, intranet site(s) and various databases. Create and manage processes, tools and resources to support the effective collection of practice group data and efficient day-to-day administration of the practice group. Support training of new legal personnel in use of technology specific to the practice group. Assist with the design, organization and implementation of practice group specific training programs in conjunction with the practice group attorneys and professional development department. Assist with analysis of practice group financial reports and metrics. Work with the PDM and Practice Group Leaders to plan and execute practice group and partner meetings, as well as internal practice group social and team-building events. Develop practice group presentations, working with the PDM, Practice Group Leaders and partners. Assist the PDM in supervising and developing the team’s Practice Development Assistants (PDAs).

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: An undergraduate degree with 3+ years of relevant experience in a law firm, professional services firm or other corporate environment (JD Degree or M.B.A. is a plus). A background and interest in business, law, marketing/business development or equivalent experience is desired. Experience in or knowledge of corporate transactional work is a plus. Working knowledge of law firm and practice operations and demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality of the firm’s internal and personnel affairs. Goal-oriented with a positive, can-do attitude and a collaborative working style, with a willingness to roll-up sleeves and get things done. Excellent oral communication and business writing skills, and proven attention to detail. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish credibility with Ropes & Gray partners and bring to bear the right mix of confidence, tact and persistence in working with the firm’s lawyers and professional staff in a multi-office environment. Exceptional project management and organizational skills, including ability to develop project plans and set deadlines to meet business objectives, manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and drive progress against both short- and long-term deadlines. Ability to anticipate, identify and solve problems, work independently, take initiative and make decisions using sound judgment. Ability to compile, review, analyze and determine logical conclusions or recommendations based on data and information that is varied in context, content and format. Interest in learning about the Mergers & Acquisitions practice group, clients and legal service offerings. Ability to contribute to the training and supervision of more junior team members and colleagues, with the opportunity to further develop management, coaching, mentoring and delegating skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology, database, presentation, spreadsheet, document management and other software applications.
