Legal Fellow Requisition Number: 28185 Department: Legal/Compliance Schedule: Full Time Shift: Day Hours: 8:30 - 5:00 Work Location: Mt. Washington Job Details: - Juris Doctorate - 1 year The Johns Hopkins Health System and Johns Hopkins Medicine Legal Department Legal Fellowship Program The Legal Department of the Johns Hopkins Health System and Johns Hopkins Medicine is committed to recruiting, developing, retaining, and promoting competent and dedicated lawyers from diverse cultures and backgrounds. We believe that a diverse group of talented legal professionals is critically important to the success of our department, our clients, and the community. We define diversity broadly to encompass, without limitation, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, veteran and military status, marital and parental status, and disability. With greater diversity, we will be more creative, effective and inclusive, bringing more varied perspectives, experiences, and interests to the practice of law in a corporate setting. In support of our commitment to provide opportunities to talented lawyers of diverse backgrounds, we offer a one-year legal fellowship. Eligibility and Criteria Factors considered in the selection of fellows include the following: ? Academic achievement; ? Law school courses; ? Grade point average (3.0 or above is preferred); ? Law review or other publication experience; ? Moot court; ? Legal aid or legal clinic participation; ? Extracurricular activities; ? Previous employment; ? Demonstrated leadership ability; ? Excellent writing and interpersonal skills; and ? A sincere interest in corporate practice and employment law. Applicants who are members of groups traditionally underrepresented in corporate legal departments are encouraged to apply. To be considered for this fellowship, applicants must have recently graduated in good standing from an ABA-accredited law school and must be available to commit to a one-year program. Students who are in their final year of law school are encouraged to apply. Duties The Vice President and General Counsel is the chief legal officer of the Johns Hopkins Health System and Johns Hopkins Medicine. Through a staff of 15 attorneys, the JHHS/JHM Legal Department provides representation and advice to The Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation and its affiliates, trustees, officers, and employees acting on its behalf. A broad range of legal issues are addressed that include labor and employment, contracts, real estate, health care privacy, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, clinical practice, safety, business transactions, financing, and tax matters. As in-house counsel, our attorneys are part of the goal setting and strategic planning for the Health System. This role provides our attorneys the opportunity to do a significant amount of preventative lawyering, including coordinating, developing, and delivering training programs and helping the Health System comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The fellowship will provide recent law graduates an opportunity to work primarily with the senior counsel for employment and labor. Although the primary concentration will be in employment, labor, civil rights, international employment, and immigration law, the fellow will support the other attorneys in the department as needed. The fellow can expect to research legal issues, prepare memoranda of law, review and draft agreements and procedures, and help prepare documents for litigation. The supervising attorney will review the fellow's work closely and meet with the fellow to provide feedback. Through the work and challenges of a corporate counsel's office, the fellow is provided with an excellent opportunity to learn how to partner with business units and problem solve in real-life business operations. Program Goal The goal of this program is twofold: (1) to provide highly competent, motivated, diverse, and recent law school graduates an opportunity to experience a corporate legal culture; and (2) to develop a pool of trained professionals from which to draw as positions become available in the Legal Department. Salary Information The compensation will be determined by the Compensation Department and will be consistent with the compensation for other fellowship programs within the Health System.
