Verity Health: Providing Quality, Compassionate Care to Diverse Communities

Verity Health System, a regional health system in California, takes pride in its long history of serving diverse communities. With four hospitals in Northern California and two in Southern California, Verity partners with community physicians to provide quality, compassionate care to patients and their families.

Before coming under the leadership of Verity Health System in December 2015, the hospitals and medical foundation were led by the Daughters of Charity. The Daughters began their healthcare mission in California in 1858, opening the Los Angeles Infirmary, now known as St. Vincent Medical Center. For over 150 years, the Daughters dedicated themselves to ministering to ill, poverty-stricken individuals. In 2002, the Daughters of Charity Health System was formed.

However, in recent years, the hospital system faced operating losses due to mounting labor costs, low reimbursement rates, and the ever-changing healthcare landscape. To ensure the continuance of care for the communities served by the hospitals, the Daughters of Charity Health System Board of Directors selected BlueMountain Capital Management LLC, a private investment firm, to recapitalize its operations and transition leadership to the new Verity Health System.

In a transaction approved by California Attorney General Kamala Harris and announced in December 2015, BlueMountain contributed over $250 million of capital to the management and operation of the six California hospitals and medical foundation. This infusion of capital assured the communities that they would continue to receive quality care.

Today, Verity Health System aims to build upon the rich legacy left by the Daughters of Charity Health System through a transformation of healthcare practices. This transformation includes a focus on more efficient delivery of quality healthcare and an enhanced alignment with physician partners.

With over 8,000 employees and physicians, Verity Health System is governed by the independent Verity Health System Board of Directors. As a non-profit, non-religious healthcare system, it is committed to providing community benefit through various community-based outreach programs and wellness activities. The system boasts 1,650 inpatient beds and six active emergency rooms, along with a range of medical specialties.
