Advice to law firm management:
Please consider offering a more affordable and comprehensive benefits package. Health insurance is important, especially for families. I love the fact that the firm is family friendly, but expensive insurance kind of runs counter to that philosophy.
Pros:
I really appreciate how family oriented this firm is. The leadership team is very understanding when issues arise at home and they are very flexible when it comes to time off. They also host a ton of events throughout the year.
Cons:
The main thing that bothers me about this firm is the price I have to pay for health insurance. The pay is only average, which makes matters even worse.

Advice to law firm management:
Be more aware of staff issues and conflicts. The pay and benefit structure should match skill and experience of lawyers and staff and often it doesn't.
Pros:
There is a great deal of upward mobility that is based on your competence and the quality of the work that you perform. The firm is very family friendly and works with you on scheduling.
Cons:
The way the cases are handled within the office can be a bit unfair and based on favoritism sometimes. Also the benefits package could be better.

At Brownstein, we don't just talk about diversity and inclusiveness, we actively pursue them. We know that the unique backgrounds, life experiences and world views of our attorneys and staff make us a better and more competitive firm in today's marketplace. That's why we recruit people from varied backgrounds. Not only is it the right thing to do, it's good for business.
We value people of all races, genders, religions, sexual orientations, national origins and abilities. Every individual brings something different to our firm, and those differences make us strong.
Our inclusion efforts extend from the board room to the dining room, from formal diversity trainings and seminars to casual dinners between Shareholders and Associates of different backgrounds. We have a Diversity and Inclusiveness Committee that ensures our efforts in this area remain cutting edge. Bruce James, the firm's former managing partner, is a frequent speaker on telling the real story behind creating an inclusiveness culture within a firm.
Our commitment to inclusiveness doesn't stop at our firm's front door; we participate in and support local and national efforts. In 2008 we were selected as Qwest's Spirit of Diversity Partner for the firm's efforts in creating a diverse workforce. We participate in the Colorado Pledge to Diversity Program, in which we invite a first-year law student from a non-traditional background to participate in our summer associate program. And we participate in a similar program in Nevada, in which we invite a second-year law student from a non-traditional background to work in our office.
We are also a proud partner of the Colorado Campaign for Inclusiveness Excellence network, a non-profit organization that seeks to transform the entire profession by supporting private and public legal organizations in their efforts at inclusiveness. This campaign provides concrete how-to guides for organizations in addition to a safe forum in which law firms can brainstorm together about how to create an inclusive firm culture. As a member of this pilot program, we have honest conversations about what is working and what isn't and address the tough issues with other member firms.
Brownstein's most recent recognition for diversity efforts was our selection for the 2010 Qwest Diversity Leadership Award that is presented annually by the Diversity in the Legal Profession Committee of the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations. In August 2010, we were ranked #90 on the MultiCultural Law Magazine's Top 100 Law Firms for Diversity. Further, the firm ranked #53 on the list of Top Law Firms for Women and #12 on the list of Top Law Firms for Native Americans. Brownstein was ranked #132 on the Minority Law Journal's 2009 Diversity Scorecard. With 33% of our attorneys who are women, Brownstein was ranked #13 in The American Lawyer's first Women in Law Firms study. In these June 2009 rankings, editors of The American Lawyer also noted that among the AmLaw 200 firms, Brownstein has the third highest percentage of women partners.
Don't think our efforts are just about numbers, however. We are implementing best practices in our workplace that benefit all employees, including those from diverse backgrounds. For example, we mentor and foster the professional development of all employees, and inclusiveness is part of those efforts.
Diverse. Inclusive. Smart. Visit any one of our offices and you'll know: It's who we are.
