Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP Reviews

- Reviewed on July 01, 2017

There is a lot of work to do and lots of deadlines to achieve. If you can cope with the fast paced and competitive environment I would say that you should join this firm as you can learn a lot of new things.

Pros : The work environment is fast paced and the environment is competitive. I would characterize this firm as competitive and interesting. The work environment is good, interesting cases, attorneys are bright and atmosphere is friendly. I learned a lot of new things while working as an attorney here. The range of work and clients that I was exposed to was stimulating and interesting.
Cons : Remuneration is average or sometimes below average. The biggest challenge is to achieve a work/life balance as the workload is cyclical in nature when multiple engagements are occurring at the same time.

Management needs to spend more time understanding the people they're managing and less time just breezing along as part of a huge machine that they think will go on no matter what they do.

Pros : There are lots of highly talented people in the firm and lots of interesting work. I always found something that grabbed my attention.
Cons : Like with many firms this size, there are a bunch of downsides. Advancement is difficult. Work load is incredibly heavy. Management often makes huge mistakes with no oversight.

Notable cases

  • Throughout its history, the firm has handled many significant, high-profile matters for its clients. Some of the more recent significant cases include:
  • Arnold & Porter LLP secured a significant victory on behalf of senior Israeli officials when on August 29, 2012, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey dismissed claims of gender discrimination and purported crimes against humanity brought against several high-ranking Israeli officials, including a current justice on Israel's Supreme Court and two cabinet-level ministers.
  • Arnold & Porter won an important victory in August 2012 when the Second Circuit affirmed the Southern District of New York's grant of a preliminary injunction prohibiting the retransmission of broadcast television programming over the Internet by a website called ivi.tv.
  • Courts affirmation of the firm's statute of limitations win for Raytheon under the Contract Disputes Act set a new precedent in legal annals. In response to an April 2, 2012 decision in which the Court of Federal Claims denied a government claim against Raytheon Company in the amount of $25 million under the Contract Disputes Act statute of limitations, the government filed a motion for reconsideration.
  • On June 21, the California Supreme Court issued a decision in a case of major importance to the banking industry: Parks v MBNA America Bank, N.A. The Court unanimously held that the claim brought by the plaintiff, Allan Parks, on behalf of a putative class of California credit card customers of MBNA is preempted by federal law.
  • Washington, DC, June 6, 2012 -- Arnold & Porter LLP represented The Charles Schwab Corporation in the sale of $425 million of depositary shares, each representing a 1/40th ownership interest in a share of 6.00% Non-Cumulative Perpetual Preferred Stock, Series B.
  • Arnold & Porter LLP advised the Government of Kenya on a $600 million term loan facility arranged by Standard Chartered Bank, Citibank and The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited. The transaction, signed on 15 May 2012, was Kenya's first international syndicated loan.
  • Arnold & Porter successfully defended Random House from a claim of copyright infringement against the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.
  • Amongst its major landmark triumphs in its history was working as counsel to Clarence Earl Gideon on the subject of award winning book Gideon's Trumpet by Anthony Lewis.
  • The firm represented the survivors of the Buffalo Creek Flood, known as one of the worst mining disasters in the country's history. A book based on the case is compulsory reading in many law schools.
  • It was the only noteworthy law firm to represent the victims of Joseph McCarthy and the "loyalty review boards" that ruined the careers of many loyal government employees. All three founders of the firm were so upset by the use of secret evidence that at one point the firm's lawyers were spending half of their time fighting these cases.
  • The firm also successfully represented the government of Venezuela in its case against the United States' Clean Air Act on the grounds that the CAA violated World Trade Organization agreements.
  • Arnold & Porter represented US Airways in its merger with America West. The firm assisted SBC Communications Inc in its acquisition of AT & T forming the new AT&T Inc.
