Advice to law firm management: Management needs to do a better job when hiring employees. Having enough people is important, but having to constantly let people go doesn't look good for morale.

Pros: Management at this firm is some of the best I have ever worked with. They treat employees just like family and everyone gets along very well. They also offer meetings on Fridays to celebrate a good work week and discuss what could be done better.

Cons: The only problem with this firm is the revolving door it creates. Management seems to hire people very quickly and don't do better interviews and background checks. They just seem to want the bodies and don't care whether people have experience or not.

Advice to law firm management: I think that the leadership team should probably step back and take a look at the culture they have created. Demanding too much of associates has obviously had a bad effect on the culture here, and things aren't going to get better on their own. They got the compensation right, they just need to work on the culture.

Pros: The best part of working here is definitely the pay and the benefits. There are plenty of perks that all employees can take advantage of, and the leadership team is very flexible when it comes to time off. Associates are paid as if they have value, and that does a great deal to boost morale.

Cons: I've found that even though the pay is good and the perks are there, office morale is still pretty low. Leadership expects a lot from associates, and many are under constant pressure to perform. This sometimes gets taken out on the support staff, even though they don't deserve it.

Diversity

Hiring and advancing diverse attorneys has been a core component of our firm culture since long before the practice gained currency in the legal marketplace. We continually assess and launch initiatives that include:

Summer associate program

Our summer associate program is an important part of our associate hiring program. Former Carlton Fields Jorden Burt summer associates make up a majority of each year's fall entry-level associate class.

The program strives to provide summer associates with a realistic view of life as a Carlton Fields Jorden Burt attorney, and to expose them to as many different practice groups and lawyers as possible. Summer associates have opportunities to meet with firm clients to observe and participate in all aspects of the firm's practice, whether in the office, at the closing table, or in the courtroom.

Carlton Fields Jorden Burt summer associates have the opportunity to work with firm attorneys at all levels of experience, including the most senior. The firm encourages summer associates to participate in its pro bono initiatives and programs with local legal aid societies. Additionally, there are opportunities for summer associates to participate in Bar, civic, and community activities.

At Butler, service, teamwork and principles are not mere words. They’re who we are and what we do. Service is what we bring to our clients, to one another, and to the community at large. Teamwork, too, describes the way we interact with one another. And our seven guiding principles define how we serve, and how we work together, 100% of the time. Community is also important. How do we define the Butler community? It isn’t a way of speaking or dressing. Nor is it a boundary or locat...
