Advice to law firm management: The leadership team should consider being more open about how decisions are being made in regards to promotions. Giving people measureable career goals will benefit the entire firm.

Pros: I'm very happy with the compensation package I received when starting here, including the benefits. Health insurance is affordable and the coverage is good.

Cons: Upward mobility suffers because of a lack of transparency regarding how associates can advance within the firm. Nobody knows quite where they stand or what they need to do to improve their chances of a promotion.

Diverse colleagues with minds and viewpoints developed within different cultural environments are central to solving our clients' legal challenges in this global business environment. Similarly, decisions made by Miles & Stockbridge's leaders from diverse backgrounds lead to richer and more comprehensive results, benefiting both our firm and the legal community. As a result, we seek to increase the number of minorities and women lawyers throughout our law firm; to give them great work; to introduce them to key clients; to place them in key leadership roles; to include them on client and industry teams; and to foster their development, including business generation, so they will be promoted to partner. Many diverse lawyers are in key firm-wide leadership positions and are members of our firm's key internal committees.

Summer associate program

Our nationally-ranked summer associate program is our single most important source of new associate hiring. To that end, we hire summer associates with the expectation that they will join us as associates. The strength of our summer program is rooted both in the commitment of our lawyers to the students and in the variety and breadth of training the firm offers. Our goal is to have the summer associate experience mirror the life of a first year associate.
