Advice to law firm management: Don't be a slacker and you will be rewarded well. Very lucrative earning potential if you put in the work.

Pros: I look forward to going into work every single day. That's more than I can say about any other firm I have worked at!

Cons: This firm has no shortage of cases and work to be done. You will always have something to do while you're here.

Advice to law firm management: Teach attorneys to respect their support group. Treat staff better.

Pros: The talent team was great and committed to developing employees. They are innovative in their work relationships with staff.

Cons: Hours can feel long at times. Office supplies are restricted.

Paul Hastings seeks students with competencies that are the hallmarks of successful associates at the firm. These include critical thinking, strong communication skills, achievement drive, interpersonal savvy, dedication to client service excellence, and the ability to work effectively as a team member. Students have to be responsible to take initiative for complex legal matters and interface with sophisticated clients around the world.

The firm extensively participates in campus recruitment's and job fairs. In 2011, the firm visited 31 law schools for campus interviews, while it participated in 5 job fairs in 2011. Impact Diversity Career Fair, Southeastern Minority Job Fair, Bay Area Diversity Job Fair, Lavender Law, Loyola Patent Law Job Fair are among the notable ones.

Pro bono

The firm encourages attorneys to handle pro bono matters. The time used for pro bono activity is treated the same as time billed to any other client for all purposes including bonuses. Pro bono work is assigned in a variety of ways, including by members of the Pro Bono Committee who serve as pro bono coordinators.

Some of the areas in which Paul Hastings has performed pro bono work in the past year include, immigrant rights, veteran rights, adoptions, children's rights, homelessness prevention, non-profit counseling, and environmental sustainability.

Paul Hastings was awarded 2nd rank among law firms in the 2011 American Lawyer Pro Bono Survey. In addition, the firms and its attorneys have been honored by other organizations, including Public Counsel, ACLU, LAFLA, Casa Cornelia, and the Public Law Center.

  • Currently, Paul Hastings is advising Facebook on a number of matters as the company continues to grow and extend its global reach into new service and product areas. One key area of the firm's work relates to the burgeoning market of online social commerce and the development of a global virtual currency.
  • The firm counseled Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. on the $1.4B sale of Samsung's hard disk drive business to Seagate Technology. The transaction was considered complex as it required asset transfers in six different jurisdictions, IP arrangements in over 25, as well as detailed second-phase reviews in the U.S., Europe, China, Korea, and Japan.
  • Paul Hastings represented J.P. Morgan as the sole sponsor and depositary on the secondary listing of HDRs of Coach, Inc. on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The deal is seen as a landmark to make Coach the first U.S. public company to list in Hong Kong and opened the door to other U.S. companies seeking to list their shares.
  • In what was widely viewed as the post-crisis relaunch of the European Commercial Mortgage-Backed Securitization (CMBS) market, Paul Hastings advised Deutsche Bank London Branch, in the first CMBS placed into the market since 2007. The new

Summer associate program

Paul Hastings' summer associate program serves is considered important not only for the associates but also for the firm itself. During the program, summer associates in each of the firm's U.S. offices have the opportunity to work on several projects with different lawyers in a variety of practice areas. Summer associates also observe and assist in trials, hearings, depositions, and negotiations, and participate in client meetings and closings.

The summer associate program provides an opportunity to gain a realistic view of what it is like to practice law at Paul Hastings on a day-to-day basis.

The annual target for billable hours is 2000 in the U.S. Some of the positives to work at Paul Hastings are good working environment, associate get real work to do at the most junior level and strong leadership.
