Advice to law firm management: The law office is losing track of having a much more presentable presence in terms of culture and growth. The firm should embrace positive changes.

Pros: The law firm is composed of a management team that has made it easier for them to collaborate with staff. Employees do have a saying in contributing to improving the environment of the law office.

Cons: The law firm has had to consider working on its presence in terms of the culture and the way it presented itself professionally. There is not much investment being placed into the firm to grow.

As Schiff Hardin has grown from one office to eight and from two attorneys to over 400, there is no doubt that our full-service firm looks different than it did a century and a half ago. For starters, we got serious about diversity before it was fashionable; today we set the pace in recruiting, hiring, and promoting diverse talent. And our efforts have not gone unnoticed—we are regularly recognized as a leader among law firms. We have also expanded shrewdly, building new offices to meet specific client needs with strategic talent acquisition. From a top construction practice operating in Chicago and New York to an agile San Francisco intellectual property team to a Washington D.C.-based team of regulatory heavyweights, all our offices offer strengths that serve each of our clients—whether that client is down the street or across an ocean. Yet there is one thing about Schiff Hardin that will never change: Our clients count on us for the knowledge, creativity, and candor that only decades of legal and business experience can provide. Our attorneys can always be found side by side with their clients, providing the practical yet creative counsel for which our firm is known.

Summer associate program

First, we want every summer associate to have the opportunity to demonstrate the professional qualities we seek in new lawyers. We look for summer associates who are eager to learn and grow and are open to new ideas, who strive for excellence, and who are dedicated to the legal profession.

Second, we'd like all of our summer associates to get a realistic look at what it's like to practice at Schiff Hardin, in terms of both the work we do and who we are. Our summer associates work with lawyers from different practice groups and different offices, experience the quality and range of our work, and gain substantive experience in the areas that interest them. By the end of the summer, our summer associates have a good feel for the nature of the firm's work, as well as its personality and culture.

The founding vision of Barack Ferrazzano in 1984 was to create a new model that departed from the standard "mega-firm" approaches and, instead, focused on delivering efficient, team-oriented services of the highest quality. Our founding partners - two highly respected law professors at Northwestern University and two former members of a prominent Chicago firm - were soon joined by like-minded colleagues also seeking an alternative to the large law firm environment. We have grown steadily ever si...

Everyone Loves LawCrossing

LawCrossing has the most listings of any job board I have used. It's actually a great site. The website had a lot of detail. It’s nice that you don't have to go through a recruiter if you don't want to. You can actually contact the law firm directly for the positions listed. LawCrossing had a ton of great features.
