Pro bono

Duane Morris' Pro Bono Program provides free legal services to those in their communities who are least able to afford them. The importance of pro bono work and volunteerism has been an integral part of Duane Morris' culture since the firm's inception more than 100 years ago.

As of January 2012, associates can credit 100 hours of pro bono work toward their billable target, doubled from the early 50 hours. However, they leave it to the lawyer's individual discretion, but do tell them that it is a great opportunity for taking control of a case and getting valuable experience. There's a coordinator in each office to oversee the pro bono program, and attorneys with significant achievements are honored at an annual ceremony.

Over the last decade the firm has represented children through Child advocates in various dependency and criminal matters. Their attempts have helped secure a permanent, nurturing environment for many a needy child.

One of the firms' lawyers, the late Henry T. Reath, was called the champion of the poor. He said that it was a lawyer's "public responsibility to provide legal service and make the system work for low-income individuals." Reath helped found the Philadelphia program for Community Legal Services, a nonprofit organization established to provide quality legal service to those in need.

The firm encourages attorneys to work on issues about which they are passionate and address issues important to their local communities. The Pro Bono Counsel and local coordinators help find appropriate projects for attorneys based on their interests and skills.

The firm provides pro bono orientation to all summer associates and involves each summer associate in a pro bono project. The firm also participates in summer associate pro bono events and projects managed by local public interest organizations.
