Advice to law firm management:
Law isn't always the nicest of professions and Day Pitney walks the line between commendable almost unacceptable. Judge for yourself.
Pros:
Day Pitney pays its attorneys well and has instituted several new benefit programs such as parental leave. I liked the generous pay and the feel of working for a larger law firm. I feel management cares about its top employees and the work ethic includes relaxation as well as office time.
Cons:
The size of the firm can also be cumbersome and a lot of meetings get carried out through video conferencing services. Also, in spite of the fair pay and generally positive attitude towards attorneys, I feel the support staff often gets shafted and disrespected and that bothers me.

Advice to law firm management:
Management should let employees know of the difficult traffic before hiring other employees, this way people can decide if the commute is worth the position before agreeing to it.
Pros:
Management at this firm couldn't be better and I really felt like part of the team when I worked here. Management was always willing to listen to employees and share any questions or concerns we may had. They never made us feel lesser or beneath them through my time here.
Cons:
Unfortunately the traffic in this area is absolutely terrible and the commute to work would take me well over an hour. The office is located right downtown so if you don't live in this city this can be an issue.

Day Pitney is committed to diversity and inclusiveness. We foster diversity within our firm and the communities we live in. Diversity is one of the firm's core values. We believe people of diverse skills, opinions, perspectives, lifestyles, ideas, thinking and knowledge make us a stronger, more productive law firm. We actively seek out people who distinguish themselves from the pack - people of diverse ethnicity, culture, race, national origin, age, religion, disabilities, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, political affiliation and veteran status.
Spearheading this commitment is our director of diversity, who is a member of the senior management team at the firm and is responsible for implementing the firm's diversity plan that ensures the firm's focus on diversity as a core value. The director of diversity serves as the firm's thought leader, ambassador and advocate on diversity, inclusion and equity initiatives and issues. The director of diversity works with the Executive Committee, cross-office Diversity Committee and other key members of the firm to further the firm's diversity objectives.
While we are proud of what the firm has achieved over the years, we continue to build on those accomplishments. One of the ways we're doing this is through internal affinity groups such as Day Pitney Attorneys of Color (DPAC), which is a network comprising all attorneys of color throughout the firm and which aims to foster an inclusive environment that helps ensure the success of minority attorneys, Women Working Together (WWT), which provides mutual support, professional growth and community service opportunities to women attorneys at the firm and to clients, and the Day Pitney Alliance, which provides an avenue for Day Pitney employees, regardless of sexual orientation or role within the firm, to express support for LGBT people, and promote awareness of and support for LGBT causes and concerns.
Additionally, we have established an LGBT Planning Group in our Individual Client practice group specifically designed to serve and support the LGBT community.
Internally at the firm we have supported the YWCA Stand Against Racism program and have facilitated "Lean In" discussion groups for employees to discuss important current issues with their colleagues. In addition, we have a Heritage Month Speaker Series that brings in speakers to discuss topics of importance related to the various heritage month celebrations. In the recent past we have hosted an Assistant Attorney General and member of the Hispanic National Bar Association task force created to raise awareness of the DREAM Act, a retired college professor to discuss the Emancipation Proclamation on the occasion of its 150th anniversary, the first female president of a major bank in Connecticut, and a panel presentation on marriage equality. These events are open to all employees at the firm and are broadcast live throughout all our offices.
Day Pitney also regularly sponsors and supports attendance at events put on by organizations dedicated to enhancing opportunities for minority lawyers and law students, such as the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, the Boston Lawyers Group, the New Jersey Law Firm Group, the Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity, and various national and state minority bar associations. Day Pitney attorneys have served in leadership positions in many of these organizations.
In addition, Day Pitney works to create innovative programs and policies to recruit and retain women and minorities. We recruit through several programs, including the Rutgers-Newark Minority Student Program, the University of Connecticut School of Law Cultural Diversity Initiative, the New Jersey Law Firm Group and the Northeast Black Law Students Association Job Fair.
We are committed to working with our clients, professional colleagues, diversity organizations and others in the communities in which we practice as we pursue the common goal of a professional workplace where opportunity is available to all. We continue to strive to provide challenging opportunities, meaningful guidance and positive incentives to assist our professionals in achieving their greatest potential. In doing so, our goal is ultimately to create advantages from our differences and to achieve richer, broader and innovative results.

Day Pitney LLP has changed how it runs its summer program by returning to the tradition of legal apprenticeship. The idea behind the move was to provide you, the law student, with the practical, hands-on training necessary to become a great lawyer.
At Day Pitney, we focus on the development and education of our attorneys, and we stress the importance of working as a team to achieve the best results for our clients. We have developed a summer program designed to reflect these key values. It emphasizes teamwork, as well as learning by observation and interaction with practicing professionals. For this reason, we no longer refer to law students as summer associates, but instead refer to them as apprentices. In this way, we are getting back to the basics and returning to our tradition of legal apprenticeships.
