Overview

Our roots can be traced to attorney and art collector John G. Johnson, the most prominent and influential Philadelphia lawyer of the late 19th century. Mr. Johnson tried 182 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and practiced law until his death in 1917, whereupon he bequeathed his collection of more than 1,200 paintings to the citizens of Philadelphia. Despite his death, attorneys who practiced under the esteemed Mr. Johnson continued to work together and founded in 1921 the genesis of what has evolved to become the present-day Saul Ewing LLP. Since 1921, Saul Ewing has grown from four lawyers in one office in Philadelphia, to 270 lawyers in 11 offices in six states and the District of Columbia. Remarkably, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts is the firm's oldest client, having been with the firm since 1921. Over the years, the firm has served many of the region's most important businesses and institutions through the terms of 16 presidents of the United States and six wars, during a period when the East Coast evolved from an industrial center to the world's leading area for knowledge, healthcare and technology. It is a period in which our lawyers and staff have seen typewriters morph into computers, rotary telephones into cell phones, and the World Wide Web accessible to them in hand-held BlackBerrys. Saul Ewing is proud to have grown and been transformed with the region it serves.

Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr LLP Reviews

- Reviewed on July 21, 2017

Advice to law firm management: Be ready to work from day one and bill as much as you can. If you want to impress your bosses at this firm, you will have to start earning as much business as you can.

Pros: This firm charges its clients top dollar, which is good if you're a partner. Whether you make partner here is up to you. There are chances to advance, but not many. The partners at this firm will not welcome just anyone into the fold -- only the best associates.

Cons: You will find this environment ruthlessly competitive. The clients may balk at the enormous bills they will have to pay, which may endanger the firm's future business. There are few clients out there who can afford this type of representation.

Advice to law firm management: The firm needs to downsize or create more opportunities for employees to advancement. This firm is large so it seems this cannot be remedied as much.

Pros: This firm goes above expectations to make you feel at home. With accommodating workspaces, flexible hours, and a great staff its second nature to expand your abilities as an attorney here.

Cons: Finding advancement opportunities within the firm is challenging. This firm is growing very rapidly, competition is fierce. As time goes on it's becoming much more difficult to advance within the firm because of this.

Diversity

While Saul Ewing convened its first Diversity Committee in the mid-1990s, the effort intensified in 2001 when the Committee was restructured to include key decision makers. Next, the Firm retained Dr. Arin Reeves of the Athens Group, who conducted a needs assessment and talked to attorneys and staff and gleaned information that resulted in Saul Ewing's Strategic Plan for Diversity.

An eleven-member Diversity Committee pursues the plan's goals and objectives. One of the Committee's traditions has become the Firm's Annual Diversity Retreat, a popular event that is held each Fall and draws attorneys from throughout the Firm. In 2008, conversations among Diversity Committee members led to the establishment of our Women's Development Initiative, and, in 2011, the Diversity Committee inspired a second affinity group, our LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) Group. The Firm is proud of its accomplishments and how Firm management has made diversity a key business priority.
