Advice to law firm management: The hours can be unforgiving and to manage that is your real challenge. You may need to work twelve hours a day and six days a week during certain time periods.

Pros: Bass, Berry & Sims PLC is one of the prestigious law firms to work for. I found that the quality and scope of the work is untouchable. There are very talented attorneys to learn from.

Cons: There is overwhelming amount of favoritism within management and it hurts your growth opportunities. I also found that there is also lack of quality feedback from management.

Founded on client service in 1922; centered to deliver today. In the early days, our founders developed a reputation for excellence; F.M. Bass, Frank Berry and Cecil Sims were fastidious, intellectually curious and highly sought after. They pioneered our now robust mergers and acquisitions practice by participating in notable transactions such as the Cheek-Neal Coffee Company, known for Maxwell House Coffee, in its sale to Postum in 1928 for $20 million and by representing Fourth and First National Bank in its merger with American National Bank in 1930. A few years later, Cecil Sims initiated one of the firm's first alternative fee arrangements, which lasted from 1934 until the late 1960's, with Vanderbilt University's Chancellor Kirkland. Ninety years after its inception, Bass, Berry & Sims continues to lead clients through increasingly complex legal challenges. Our highly skilled attorney teams aim to provide a profound understanding of our clients' businesses and perspective, sound judgment, efficiency and responsiveness to every matter. Recently, we represented a Nashville-based, leading provider of healthcare services in its leveraged buyout (LBO), which was, at the time, the largest LBO in history; we were engaged as the New York Stock Exchange's Regulatory Auditor; and we successfully tried the largest case in Tennessee involving the breach of a $1.4 billion merger agreement. We advance opportunities and deliver results.

Hiring Criteria

Bass, Berry & Sims PLC follows the set of hiring criteria outlined below.

Bass, Berry & Sims looks for candidates who possess high academic achievement and participation in law school activities, a professional desire to help clients, an ambitious nature, and a willingness to work in a collegial team environment. At our firm, we recognize that each attorney adds value through his or her diverse background, exceptional academic achievement, and outstanding interpersonal skills.

Pro bono

Bass, Berry and Sims provides pro bono work for multiple organizations including the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, Memphis Area Legal Services, local bar associations and nonprofit groups, with a commitment to providing free legal services for low income and disadvantaged people.

Our associate attorneys receive billable hour credit for up to 50 hours per year of pro bono work. Based on the priorities established by the Tennessee Supreme Court and the recommendations of the Court's Access to Justice Commission, Bass, Berry & Sims believed it was important to create more opportunities for attorneys to work on pro bono cases. The firm encourages all attorneys to meet or exceed the expectation of the American Bar Association and Tennessee Rules of Professional Conduct that lawyers spend 50 hours each year engaged in pro bono work, primarily by providing direct representation to low income people.
