Advice to law firm management: This firm needs to do a better job at staying on top of employees and work gossip. This does nothing but set people back and is unprofessional in the long run.

Pros: When I first started with this firm I went through a long training process that really helped me feel more secure in my position. I rarely had any questions and if I did management was always there to help me get through.

Cons: This firm felt a bit like high school at times. Staff would gossip constantly and management just didn't seem to care. When it came to the workplace being friendly and professional, this firm just simply fell flat.

Advice to law firm management: I think that leadership should make things more clear to those who want to move up within the firm. The waters are a bit muddy as they stand right now.

Pros: Leadership at this firm really tries to foster a work environment that people enjoy. The work/life balance here is the best of any firm I've been with, and I've been with a few. The salary and benefits are also pretty good.

Cons: There doesn't seem to be a lot of upward mobility here. I haven't seen anyone promoted since I've been here, and there isn't a clear path one can follow if they desire to climb the ladder

  • Throughout its history, the firm has handled many significant, high-profile matters for its clients including such history changing cases as "Watergate," "Pentagate" and Iran-Contra cases. Other landmark cases are:
  • The "Chicago Water Steal Case" involving 13 states in a dispute over the diversion of enormous quantities of water from the Great Lakes by the Chicago Sanitary District and the Village of Euclid v. Ambler Realty zoning case, which opened the way nationally for widespread zoning.
  • Nearly 20 years of involvement with litigation on behalf of various groups of private utilities attacking the New Deal legislation which established public power projects, the most famous of which was the TVA case.
  • It also collaborated upon the first newspaper joint operating agreement (JOA), which was between two Albuquerque, N.M., newspapers.
  • Baker Hostetler is representing a coalition of companies in a massive nationwide arbitration against 48 states. The arbitration involves a potential reduction of more than $1 billion in the tobacco industry's payments resolving states' claims for health care costs related to tobacco use. The American Lawyer has called the cases "unprecedented" in size and complexity.
  • Baker Hostetler serves as Washington DC, counsel to major league baseball, a partnership that began nearly 100 years ago, including drawing up the charter for the American league.
  • The firm represented long-time client transdigm group incorporated a manufacturer of parts for commercial and military planes, in connection with its agreement to acquire Amsafe Global Holdings, Inc. for $750 million.
  • Baker Hostetler represented the E.W. Scripps Company in the $212 million acquisition of all the outstanding shares of the McGraw-Hill broadcasting company, a subsidiary of the McGraw-Hill companies. The deal encompassed a total of nine television stations, four of which are ABC affiliates.
  • The firm was hired by the university of Louisville physicians to counsel the group throughout its major integration of academic medical center faculty practice plans, including the transition of 450 physicians and more than 20 separate entities.
  • Baker Hostetler was successful in reaching a partial settlement on behalf of 7,200 dairy farmers in a class action antitrust suit against dean foods. Dean foods, one of the principal defendants and one of the largest milk producers in the country, agreed to a $140 million settlement.

Baker Hostetler took home the "M&A Middle-Market Deal of the Year" honors from The M&A Advisor for its work in the sale of Character Licensing.
The Deal magazine ranked Baker Hostetler among the top 10 law firms in the country for M&A deals in oil, gas and oilfield service industries.

BTI Consulting Group named Baker Hostetler to the "Client Service A-Team" for the 10th consecutive year, earning the Firm recognition as a "Client Service Stalwart" for its "continuous client service excellence."
FORTUNE 500 general counsel named Baker Hostetler as a "Go-to Law Firm" when surveyed by Corporate Counsel magazine for the publication's latest guide to in-house law departments.
Chambers USA ranked 71 Baker Hostetler attorneys, including 12 newly ranked attorneys, and 15 individual practice areas, in the 2012 edition of the prestigious Chambers USA Guide: America's Leading Lawyers for Business.
Two Baker Hostetler attorneys were named to Lawdragon's 2012 list of Most Powerful Employment Lawyers.
The Firm ranked No 32 on the 2012 Multicultural Law magazine's list for "Top Law Firms for Women." It was a commendable improvement from its previous year's ranking of No 52.


Baker Hostetler has a long-standing commitment to diversity which it actively pursues by recruiting, promoting and retaining women and minority attorneys. The firm places great emphasis on understanding and appreciating diversity at the workplace and acknowledges that issues of race, gender and culture make them better attorneys, a stronger firm and a more inclusive, respectful place to work.

Last year the firm had 5.6 percent minority lawyers, 20.2 percent women lawyers, almost 20 percent of its associates were minority and half of them were women. For the last 12 years, upwards of half of all new Baker Hostetler associates were women and minority attorneys.

For the firm, keeping a diverse workplace is not merely the right thing to do but a business compulsion. It recognizes that in order to serve the needs of its diverse client's base, its lawyers need to be equally diverse. Summer associate program

Baker Hostetler's summer program is designed to give law students exposure to wide-ranging areas of the firm's practice. Summer associates attend conferences, "lunch-and-learn" practice group sessions, depositions, trials and other court proceedings, labor arbitrations, administrative proceedings and business transaction closings.

The firm closely monitors the summer associate's assignments, giving them an opportunity to work on multiple projects alongside the firms lawyers from different practice areas. Each summer associate is partnered with a senior associate, oftentimes former summer associates, who help facilitate introductions to other attorneys in the office and offer advice and direction about the firm, its office culture and its clients.

Associates work is regularly appraised by the firm's attorneys and formal and informal feedback is provided along with a final evaluation upon the completion of the program.

The firm's summer program provides as strong balance of realistic work and the fun and joy that come with working in the collegial atmosphere that the firm provides. Summer associates are expected to work and act like lawyers in the office.
