Advice to law firm management:
This firm enjoys a solid reputation, a good client list, and has a number of court victories that stand out. You will want to apply here and see if this is the right fit for you.

Pros:
The senior partners here know their associates are eager to make an impression. So you will be given a chance. Make sure you don't squander that opportunity. You will have a chance to do great things here and get a chance to make partner.

Cons:
There seems to be a limited practice area for new associates. You may not get the plum assignment you are seeking. Instead, you may be forced to work in an area of the law that is not as interesting to you. Many associates will not appreciate this.

Advice to law firm management:
Don't overlook good lawyers just because they aren't working with high end clients. Look for the potential in all the people who work there.

Pros:
The associates are given meaningful work early in their careers. The firm also maintains a good work/life balance. They're especially understanding with parents.

Cons:
Your career growth can be somewhat stunted if you don't wind up working with the big clients on the big cases. Just not a great career path for some.

Practice Areas

Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP practices law in the following areas and works with its clients to provide the best possible legal solutions.

Hiring Criteria

Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP follows the set of hiring criteria outlined below.

We look for excellent academic achievement; legal acumen; strong writing ability; leadership; solid interpersonal, client service and professional skills; and a high level of motivation to assume significant responsibility and succeed. Journal, moot court, and related extra-curricular activities are also taken into account.

Pro bono

Patterson Belknap has a long and proud history of public service, embodied today in our unparalleled pro bono program. Every lawyer at the firm is active in pro bono work. Since 2004, 100% of our attorneys have participated in pro bono projects every year. By accepting the American Bar Association's pro bono challenge, we agreed to devote up to five percent of the firm's annual billable hours to public service work. The firm is consistently ranked near the top of The American Lawyer's annual pro bono survey.

At the heart of our pro bono program is a deep commitment to bringing the best possible legal representation to the most underserved, and frequently overlooked, populations. We are extremely proud of the work we do, frequently in partnership with some of the nation's most respected legal services organizations. Our attorneys work one-to-one with clients daily to resolve legal issues that could otherwise leave them and their families devastated. While these matters are not always widely publicized, the work our attorneys perform both inside and outside the courtroom often makes the difference between our clients being sheltered or homeless, healthy or sick, and with or without a voice in the courtroom, before administrative agencies or in their daily lives.

Diversity Write a review

"My experience at Patterson is that diversity is not a slogan or a trend. It is, instead, a firm commitment. While the quality of one's ideas and work certainly matter, the respect that one gives to another also matters greatly. We recognize that our firm is enriched by the different characteristics of our colleagues. Rather than ignoring these diverse personal differences, we affirm and celebrate them; and that is quite refreshing."
