Job Title: Regional Counsel

Job Responsibilities:
The Regional Counsel is tasked with overseeing the daily operations and overall management of the regional office. This role involves working with the President and General Counsel, Director of Litigation, staff attorneys, and other Regional Counsels to determine the litigation and public policy advocacy priorities for the Northwest regional office. The Regional Counsel initiates and conducts litigation, providing regular guidance on legal issues, strategies, and points of law to regional office staff. They are responsible for maintaining a docket of active litigation and directly participating in complex civil rights cases across multiple program areas. Additionally, the Regional Counsel provides general supervision, guidance, and training to the regional office staff to ensure appropriate investigations are initiated and conducted, litigation is warranted and effectively conducted, advocacy positions and papers are well-researched and effectively written and/or delivered, and community education programs are successfully implemented. The role includes supervising and managing the performance of the regional office staff, which includes attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff. The Regional Counsel acts as a spokesperson for the organization in the region to the media and at special events or forums, and develops and maintains a network of ties to other organizations and coalitions to further ongoing litigation and public policy advocacy. Additionally, the Regional Counsel assists development staff and the President and General Counsel in coordinating fundraising activities for the Seattle office.

Education and Experience:
Candidates must possess a and have active bar membership in one or more states, with eligibility for active bar membership in Washington required. Bar membership in another Western state is desirable. The position requires at least five years of progressively responsible experience in civil rights and public interest law, with at least three of those years involving litigation of complex or class action cases in federal and/or state courts. Additionally, at least one year of experience must involve supervision of legal, paralegal, and clerical personnel.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate must have excellent research, writing, and communication skills. Knowledge and awareness of local, regional, and national issues affecting the Latino community are important, and knowledge of civil rights policy and law, immigration policy and law, voting rights policy and law, and/or education policy and law is desirable. The candidate should be able to supervise legal, non-legal, and administrative staff in a manner that fosters an effective team effort. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is preferred. A willingness and ability to engage in local and national travel as needed is required.

Salary Information:
The compensation for the Regional Counsel position ranges from $104,000 to $128,000+ per year, with a fixed salary scale commensurate with years of legal experience.
