Senior Surety Counsel, Contractor Support
Job Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the Senior Surety Counsel, Contractor Support, include providing coverage advice and acting as a strategic partner to claims professionals. Specific duties encompass:
- Offering legal advice on various coverage issues related to claims managed by the department.
- Conducting legal research and issuing written coverage opinions.
- Assisting with the issuance of coverage position letters as needed.
- Reviewing outside counsel’s coverage opinions on request.
- Examining draft declaratory judgment actions concerning coverage issues.
- Participating in strategic discussions on coverage matters upon request.
- Monitoring case law on various coverage issues and informing stakeholders of new developments.
- Providing training on coverage issues to the department.
- Reviewing proposed policy wording as requested.
- Communicating with underwriting partners regarding coverage issues.
- Preparing white papers on coverage-related topics as requested.
- Developing tools to track advice requests, advice provided, coverage opinions issued, and coverage rulings received.
- Creating workflow processes for reviewing coverage issues, providing coverage advice, and determining if outside coverage counsel should be retained.
- Preparing quarterly reports to Claims Management, communicating key performance metrics, identifying action plans for training as needed, and identifying trends relating to coverage issues.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor Degree and be barred in at least one state. Additionally, candidates should have at least five years of experience in the surety industry. Preferred experience includes familiarity with reverse flow business and large national surety accounts, as well as experience with broker-facing relationships. The position requires a solution-oriented individual who excels in problem-solving and can distill legal concepts to present risk and exposure scenarios clearly to underwriters.
Salary Information:
The base salary for this position ranges from $104,300 to $173,800, with a 25% bonus potential. The salary offered will be based on factors such as job-relevant education, experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors.
