Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk

Job Responsibilities:
The role of a Law Clerk at the **Members Only** (OPD) in the Juvenile Protection Division involves a variety of tasks aimed at advocating for youth in the justice system. Law Clerks work closely with Juvenile Defenders on all aspects of case preparation, gaining substantive skills and real case experience necessary for future employment as a criminal defense attorney. Key responsibilities include:
- Observing Juvenile Court proceedings.
- Drafting modification motions.
- Locating and interviewing witnesses.
- Visiting clients in detention and placements.
- Drafting letters and memos.
- Assisting with case development both in and out of the courtroom.
- Conducting research.

Law Clerks are expected to work zealously for their clients under the supervision and direction of assigned staff attorneys. Each student is considered an important member of the defense team and receives training on issues of child development, best practices, and juvenile reform. The internship experience is tailored to meet the academic and professional goals of the individual.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Law Clerk position must be current law school students or recent law school graduates. While preferences are given to applicants with experience working with juveniles and those who have completed Criminal Procedure, strong written and oral communication skills, adaptability in a dynamic environment, and a strong work ethic are essential.

Law Clerks can join OPD three times a year: in the spring, summer, and fall semesters. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and candidates indicate their preferred offices for consideration. Final placements are consistent with the candidates' preferences, and only offices in Montgomery County and Baltimore City are accessible via public transportation.

Salary Information:
The Law Clerk positions at OPD are unpaid volunteer positions. However, OPD supports externs seeking credits for their work and sponsors grant or other outside funding applications where applicable.

Additional Information:
The application process requires submission of a resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample no longer than 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript. Applications must be emailed within a couple of days of submitting the form but no later than August 1, 2025. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The position is in-person, and students must start the clerkship by September 2, 2025, committing to at least 10 weeks of work. Law Clerks are expected to work consistent days and hours throughout the duration of their clerkship.
