Title/Position: Staff Attorney

Job Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney at the organization is tasked with providing comprehensive legal services to both . citizens and noncitizen survivors of sex and labor trafficking. This role involves assisting clients with both long-term and short-term legal needs. Long-term legal needs include immigration relief, post-conviction relief, victim-witness representation, and civil litigation. Short-term legal needs focus on urgent matters such as representing clients in protective order proceedings, providing criminal defense advocacy, representing noncitizen clients in immigration bond hearings, advocating for victim rights, and assisting survivors in applying for California Victim Compensation Board benefits.

The Staff Attorney plays a crucial role in the organization's emergency response program, which operates a 24-hour hotline for survivors of human trafficking. They are responsible for conducting phone-based factual intakes to determine if a caller's experience meets the legal definition of human trafficking and advising them on their legal rights and available services. The attorney will be "on-call" one week per month for both Night ER (5 pm to 9 am) and Day ER (9 am to 5 pm) shifts to manage these intakes.

Additional responsibilities include:
- Coordinating with the social services team to respond to hotline calls during required shifts.
- Performing factual intake and managing initial legal screening for new clients.
- Collaborating with social services and shelter staff.
- Supporting advocacy work for policy reform focused on the human rights of trafficked persons, migrants, and low-wage workers.
- Providing outreach, training, and technical assistance to legal aid organizations, law firms, and law enforcement to support trafficked clients.

Education and Experience Information:

- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with trafficked persons, legal organizations, community-based organizations, volunteer lawyers, and government agencies.
- Capability to develop and implement effective systems for managing caseloads.
- Ability to respond to emergency and breaking cases, with a requirement to be on-call by phone one week per month for both day and night shifts.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and honest communication abilities are essential.

Desirable qualifications include:
- Knowledge of trafficking and the issues affecting trafficked persons.
- Experience working with victims of trauma or abuse.
- Substantive experience with immigration, criminal law, family law, and/or victims' rights advocacy.
- Bilingual skills are preferred.

Salary Information:
The salary for the Staff Attorney position ranges from $70,000 to $80,000 per year, paid bi-weekly. The benefits package includes medical, life, disability, paid sick/vacation time, and a 403(b) plan.
