The HRA/Department of Social Services is seeking an Attorney Interne to join their team in the Office of General Counsel/Office of Legal Affairs. This position will provide legal counsel to the Commissioners and Administrators of both HRA and the Department of Homeless Services, as well as senior Agency officials. The Attorney Interne will receive legal training and assist the senior and supervising attorneys in reviewing and analyzing federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations related to agency initiatives.
The Office of General Counsel is responsible for the administration of the Office of Legal Affairs, Fair Hearing Administration, Office of Policy, Procedures and Training, and oversees the Office of Contracts and Office of Advocacy. The Attorney Interne will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of legal matters, including drafting legal documents, providing legal assistance, and representing the Agency in court proceedings.
Responsibilities:
- Receive legal training in the Office of Legal Affairs and assist senior attorneys in reviewing and analyzing laws, rules, and regulations related to the delivery of social services
- Draft legal documents and provide legal assistance by researching applicable statutes, case law, and other materials
- Draft legal opinions in response to requests for legal guidance and interpret laws and regulations
- Represent the Agency in court proceedings, including Supreme and Civil Courts
- Assist senior attorneys in liaising with the NYC Law Department to support the Agency's defense in major litigation and appeals
- Perform other related tasks as assigned
Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited US law school or admission to the New York State Bar
- Excellent writing, analytical, and research skills
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Ability to multi-task and work under supervision
- Legal experience in public interest law or government preferred
