Job Title: Housing Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
The Housing Attorney at the organization is a critical member of the interdisciplinary legal team, tasked with providing comprehensive legal representation and advocacy for clients facing housing issues. Key responsibilities include:
- Representing clients in Bronx and Manhattan Housing Courts, administrative hearings, supreme court, and appellate litigation, including trial representation.
- Engaging in community-based initiatives to address housing issues and advocate for clients' benefits.
- Collaboratively developing strategies to retain affordable housing and ensure community stabilization.
- Maintaining detailed and consistent case notes and status updates in the organization's proprietary database.
- Organizing and maintaining client files in compliance with grant requirements.
- Working with the Buildings Unit and organizers to potentially provide representation in group or class action cases.
- Completing additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
- Participating in community empowerment and organizing activities related to housing.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Housing Attorney position must have the following qualifications:
- A . Law Degree or . with admission to the New York State Bar or a willingness to take the bar exam.
- Relevant experience in housing and court proceedings is preferred.
- Experience working with similar populations in a community-based setting is strongly preferred.
- The ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines.
- Strong verbal and writing skills in English.
- Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are helpful but not required.
