Manager, Staff Counsel
Job Responsibilities:
The Manager, Staff Counsel is responsible for managing all activities within the Staff Counsel office related to the defense of lawsuits against the company's insureds in liability cases, as well as representing the company in subrogation, Uninsured Motorist (UM) and Underinsured Motorist (UIM), and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) suits or arbitrations. Key responsibilities include:
- Managing subordinates in activities related to the defense of lawsuits against insureds and on behalf of the company in UM/UIM, PIP, and subrogation suits.
- Interviewing and approving job applicants for employment and conducting or reviewing associate performance appraisals.
- Initiating or approving salary adjustments, performance ratings, and other personnel changes.
- Counseling associates and taking disciplinary actions or terminating employment as necessary.
- Representing insureds in liability cases, UM/UIM, and PIP suits filed in courts of limited and unlimited jurisdiction.
- Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
- Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department.
- Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions and examinations before trial and examinations under oath.
- Defending all assigned matters by trial, arbitration, or mediation, as applicable.
- Meeting deadlines for responding to pleadings and correspondence; appearing timely in court, arbitrations, depositions, meetings, and other scheduled matters.
- Training and supervising less experienced attorneys, providing feedback on file handling and expense management.
- Reviewing office reports and implementing changes to improve office statistics, including timeliness of reports to clients, productivity reports, client and claims survey results, resolved ratio, and subrogation results.
- Adhering to the company's Code of Conduct, policies, and operating principles.
- Meeting attendance standards to perform necessary job functions and facilitate interaction with subordinates and management.
Education and Experience Information:
- Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in applicable jurisdictions and meet and maintain licensing requirements, including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable.
- Must have a minimum of seven years of litigation experience, including insurance defense or personal injury.
- Management experience is preferred.
Salary Information:
The annual salary range for this position is $135, - $210,. The final salary offered to the selected candidate will take into account multiple factors, including the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location, as well as market and business considerations.
Additional Information:
