Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel - Special Federal Litigation

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel for the Special Federal Litigation Division is responsible for defending the City and its officials in federal civil rights cases. These cases typically involve allegations of police, district attorney, or correction officer misconduct, where individuals claim their constitutional rights were violated during arrests, prosecutions, or events occurring in City jails. The attorney will manage a caseload from inception to resolution, which may include motion practice, settlement, or trial. Key responsibilities include:
- Defending the City and law enforcement members in cases brought by individuals with reversed convictions or those challenging police actions during demonstrations and cannabis law enforcement.
- Handling class actions on various constitutional claims.
- Conducting initial investigations to assess the appropriateness of representation.
- Answering complaints and appearing at court conferences.
- Engaging in extensive discovery, both paper and electronic.
- Taking and defending depositions.
- Drafting dispositive motions.
- Conducting settlement negotiations.
- Taking cases to trial in federal court when necessary.

The position offers flexibility through a work-from-home pilot program, allowing attorneys to work remotely on a limited basis or select two set days to work from home each week, subject to division approval and operational needs. This pilot program is under evaluation for its effectiveness in City agencies.

Education and Experience Information:
Applicants for the Assistant Corporation Counsel position must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school and possess a minimum of two years of litigation experience. Preferred areas of experience include federal practice, municipal liability, constitutional, or personal injury law. Applicants must hold admission to practice law in the State of New York and be admitted or eligible for immediate admission to the Southern District of New York (SDNY) and Eastern District of New York (EDNY). Strong legal writing and oral advocacy skills are essential for this role.

Salary Information:
The salary range for the Assistant Corporation Counsel position is $87, to $175,.
