Council for Children's Rights - Attorney - Individual Advocacy Team The candidate will provide legal representation and educational advocacy (including but not limited to special education and school disciplinary matters) to SpEAK clients. Provide legal representation and advocacy for children placed in the custody of the Department of Social Services through a delinquency action; Access resources and services as necessary to advocate for the interests of clients. Engage in dispute resolution and/or appeal of unfavorable decisions. Conduct legal research and analysis in education, mental health, and child welfare matters. Provide advice, consultation, and training on child advocacy, with an emphasis on special education,internally and externally. Handle individual caseload including setting up case files, maintaining contact and communication with team members and clients, attending court dates and team meetings, and keeping appropriate case documentation, including data entry in the database. Participate, as appropriate, on community collaborations and task forces. Participate in agency events related to fundraising and philanthropy.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. Strong working knowledge of law, policy, and procedures relating to children's rights in the areas of special education, child welfare, and mental health. Prior experience providing direct legal representation to low-income clients. Experience working with parties in the juvenile court system. Ability to identify needs and develop goals to meet the client's needs. Good time management and organization skills.. Ability to work independently and to accept supervision. Excellent ability to communicate both verbally and in writing. Commitment to public interest law. Spanish fluency preferred.
