Health Law Unit Paralegal
Duties: The candidate will be responsible for screening clients and completing any necessary form questionnaires for Social Security, housing, employment, domestic relations, and estate planning; conducting off-site outreach at various locations; tracking cases to ensure proper documentation is gathered and updating proper funding codes; data management, which includes accurately entering new case information into Legal Aid’s client database and other databases for grant compliance purposes; training new employees and interns on case management systems and establishing their account login; requesting computer access and key cards for new employee and interns from the IT department; preparing for weekly case acceptance meeting by uploading cases to conference room screen; creating the department’s intake schedule each month; preparing reports for funders and attending scheduled site visits; assisting attorneys during estate planning execution; providing advocacy in Social Security cases and going to the Social Security Administration to review files with or without the client; making home, hospital, or hospice visits when clients are unable to come into the office; handling all internal referrals to the Health Law Unit; maintaining the monthly intake and outreach schedule; file management, including scanning documents into client database; filing and archiving closed cases; case handling, including providing clients with information and advice under attorney supervision; preparing closing letters; drafting conflict letters; assisting staff with document preparation, organization, trial binders, notarization, and medical records requests; volunteer management, including maintenance of volunteer contact information and case assignments, tracking and closing volunteer cases; supporting attorneys in their client representation; and other paralegal work as needed.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: An undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred but not required. Candidates should possess strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, excellent computer skills, and have a demonstrated interest or experience working with low-income persons. Excellent communication and listening skills, ability to work on a team and alone, adaptability and appreciation of diversity are required. Ready access to a working car, a high level of proficiency with word processing, and accurate data entry are also required. Experience with Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets required. Previous experience with law office management software is highly valued. The ideal candidate possesses excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, doctors, social workers, and hospital staff. Qualifications preferred include previous work with low-income persons and/or persons with serious diseases, and knowledge of health law and poverty law. Proficiency in Spanish and willingness to improve language skills is highly valued.
