The candidate provides a Variety of direct legal support assistance with AUSA staff. Identifies need for and prepares final form legal documents, correspondence, and other related materials. Assignments include: Prepares a variety of substantive legal documents to include various motions, proposed orders, warrants, indictments, subpoenas, briefs, and other legal actions to represent the interests of the United States in Litigation. Legal documents are properly formatted and thoroughly proofread for punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Repetitive/routine legal documents are consistently prepared independently in accordance with established guidelines with fewer than three errors during the contract period. These documents are drafted for review and approval of AUSA staff prior to issue. Provides complete documents either on or before established suspense date. Upon approval, processes documents and performs necessary follow-up. Document preparation may entail proficient use of data transcription machine. As required by AUSA staff, verifies citations and statutory references using original and online legal resources and ensures citations and references are complete and consistent with source material. Composes original lets that do not require legal interpretations, but do require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology, e.g., transmittal of pleadings, requests for extension of time in certain cases, advising of actions taken or developments in cases referred by other deferral departments and agencies, and notices to attorneys representing defendants. Provides assistance to assigned. AUSA staff in preparing for court and receives, screens, and places telephone calls, visitors, and mail. In providing such assistance, recognizes deadlines and matters of particular concern to the assigned ALISA staff and takes immediate and appropriate action, Support assignments of this nature involve the form, content and issues of legal instruments and documents, and the steps and procedures involved in processing, storing: and retrieving legal actions and legal information pertaining to the activities of the USAO. Characteristic assignments of this nature include one or more of the following: Documents are completed in a timely manner presented for signature in the proper format, and are normally signed by the supervisor as prepared. Documents are infrequently returned for editorial changes and rarely returned for spelling, format, or punctuation errors. Strict internal controls must be maintained. Monitors the progress of pending cases and initiates action insure that legal pleadings, forms, reports, correspondence, and other documents are prepared and submitted within established deadlines. Keeps appropriate staff members informed about the current status of cases. With direction, maintains attorney and court calendars, assembles exhibits, schedules court reports, schedules witnesses, arranges for service subpoenas, arranges travel, schedules conferences, etc. Exercises judgment and discretion in determining information provided to telephonic inquiries, visitors. Answers inquiries not requiring legal interpretation and refers other questions to appropriate staff members. Correctly screens income mail. Correctly prepares outgoing mail. Establishes and maintains files (e.g., case, reading, reference, docketing, administrative), and maintains the integrity of data input into the case management system. Typical assignments include: Performs docketing duties such aa opening, updating and closing cases through use of the automated case tracking system. In accordance with office policy, establishes and maintains files which are current, accessible, and retrievable. Consolidates, eliminates, and closes files as necessary. Regarding integrity of case management input, on own initiative reviews resource document/file to determine appropriate codes and, if necessary, researches missing/questionable information by consulting with assigned AUSA staff. Based on information gathered from source, correctly enters data into proper subsystem. For routine input of data, and upon receipt of procedural coding changes and/or updates, ensures such changes or updates, as appropriate, are implemented within established time frame. Provides assistance to assigned AUSA staff that is dependable and effective in dealings with courts, clients, coworkers (including supervisors and support staff) and others. Typical assignments include: Performs all assigned tasks commensurate with experience level with appropriate supervision and occasionally is available for special assignments or volunteers for special projects. Performs tasks requiring interaction, oral and written, with courts, clients, co-workers (including supervisors and support staff) and others in a diplomatic, cooperative, honest, fair, considerate, courteous, professional, and timely manner. Produces a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications. For example, assignments may include integrating output from different software types, e.g., tables produced by database applications and charts and. graphs produced by electron in spreadsheet applications, into word processing or desk top publishing text. Products include complicated tables, graphs and chaffs which be incorporated legal documents or courtroom presentations. Ensures proper format; spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.
