Assistant Public Defender I / Attorney The candidate will handle trial and appellate cases. Will be conducting client and witness interviews, working with staff investigators to investigate cases, filing pretrial motions and litigating motions. Must have Virginia State Bar license or have taken the Bar and awaiting results. Also Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree is required for consideration. The qualified applicant will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing as well as the ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments and remain organized. A valid driver’s license and the means to travel to all courts and regional jails are required. Basic knowledge of criminal law, criminal defense procedures, court practices and procedures, legal codes and precedents, client file maintenance, internet search methods, and Virginia Criminal Law. Should be currently office certified to accept appointments to misdemeanor cases is needed. Basic familiarization with Constitutional Law and Standards of Practice for Indigent Defense Representation is required. Ability to prepare legal briefs, prepare appeals, evaluate findings and develop strategies based on the findings is must. Preferred qualifications include having management principals and public administration, having investigative and interviewing procedures, techniques and duties, familiar with law enforcement systems. Basic knowledge of Virginia criminal database programs, preparing reports, and finding program alternatives, funding and eligibility criteria for clients is also preferred.
