Paralegal at Houston Housing Authority Duties: Assist General Counsel with all aspects of litigation, claims, etc. Prepare drafts for contracts, memorandums, and correspondence. Conduct electronic criminal background checks to aid in the processing of tenant and participant applications and re-certifications, as needed. Assist in responding to requests for public information and requests to review legal files. Schedule and/or participate in grievance and informal hearings. Assist in processing of requests for reasonable accommodations. Research legal issues. Prepare pleadings and other court documents as needed. Index and summarize depositions as needed. Manage and update law library. Assist in preparing witnesses for court appearances. Prepare trial notebooks as needed. Monitor administrative cases. Review legal publications for pertinent information and disseminates to appropriate personnel. Maintain records of the Housing Authority owned properties.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Paralegal certificate from an accredited and ABA-approved school required. Bachelorâ€™s degree in English, Communications, or Business Administration preferred. 3+ years' related professional experience and/or training in a law office setting. Advanced computer skills a must, proficient in Microsoft Office products. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required. Must be able to maintain highest level of confidentiality and ethics. Knowledge of the laws of Texas, court proceedings, civil actions, pleadings, trial, etc. Knowledge of law office practices and procedures, business English, basic arithmetic, and legal proceedings. Knowledge of HUD and Houston Housing Authority policies, procedures, and practices. Knowledge and strong understanding of legal terminology, business law, or technical legal writing. Knowledge of internet software; spreadsheet software and word processing software. Skilled in operating general office machines and computers. Ability to demonstrate mature professional judgment and a high degree of initiative. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups, the general public, persons with diverse backgrounds, and to employees. Ability to take direction and work with others under stressful conditions. Ability and experience to interpret and apply the many statutory and regulatory provisions pertaining to and involved in their administration. Ability to communicate in an advisory capacity and relate to persons of diverse backgrounds and abilities and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those individuals and with other employees. Sharp writing skills. Advanced organizational, clerical, and analytical skills. Pays attention to details.
