Staff Attorney/Clinical Supervisor Duties: Represent young people in juvenile delinquency and school discipline proceedings in County, California. Provide advice, counsel, and limited scope representation to youth and families facing challenges related to the collateral consequences of court-involvement, including juvenile record sealing, court-imposed debt, probation conditions, school discipline and enrollment problems, and electronic monitoring, to name a few. Collaborate with community partners to engage in limited policy advocacy in the areas of court-imposed debt, as well as the overuse of electronic monitoring and other forms of intensive juvenile probation supervision. Teach, train, and supervise clinical law students, legal fellows, and volunteer attorneys, including substantive law and skills training, weekly individual and group supervision meetings, and day-to-day monitoring of individual work. Complete administrative tasks, such as those related to grant management and reporting. Participate in ongoing professional development to improve client services and student supervision. Additional tasks as assigned by Supervisor.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree required. Member of California Bar or ability to sit for July Bar Exam. Two years of California Bar membership preferred. 2+ years of legal experience, preferably representing clients in criminal or juvenile delinquency proceedings. Knowledge of, and ideally experience in, juvenile delinquency law and school discipline processes. Experience with, or strong interest in, law student supervision and clinical teaching. Ability to manage a demanding case load; excellent time management, priority-setting and organizational skills. Excellent written and oral advocacy skills. Ability to partner and work effectively with a diverse range of groups, including people of color, homeless people, immigrants, non-English speakers, people with mental disabilities, people experiencing domestic violence, law students, service providers, government employees, community partners, elected officials, and law school faculty. Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Bilingual skills in Spanish preferred.
