Assistant Managing Attorney Duties: Responsible for assisting the Managing Attorney with maintaining and growing a legal presence in the local jurisdiction. Oversees most law office operations including case assignments, hiring, supervision and the professional development of the law office staff, as well as assisting the Managing Attorney with budgeting. Assumes a major strategic role in ensuring optimal client results through effectively partnering with the Worker’s Compensation Claim department and delivering quality, professional legal services. Maintain control and remain responsible for most all budgetary items other than approving expense reimbursements of direct reports per Travel & Expense Policy. Oversees and manages assigned staff and/or offices/jurisdictions dedicated to tort and construction defect defense, subrogation and trial work. This oversight includes determining case assignments, hiring, providing oversight and guidance in case handling, and providing general coaching, supervision and professional development of the law office staff. Provides budgeting assistance to the Managing Attorney and may handle a reduced personal caseload. Accountable for the quality and delivery of legal services to clients and customers of the office as it pertains to tort, subrogation and construction defect claims. Ensures adherence to all quality, customer service and litigation management standards; conducts local management file reviews; participates in countrywide quality program; supports a professional and healthy work environment; and, monitors and tracks large loss files. Assumes personal reduced caseload and provides representation for clients and/or including trying cases and providing related legal advice and services. Assists in the implementation of new business initiatives and fosters positive change in the work environment. Responsible for compliance with all applicable ethical requirements and standards. Ensures effective partnering exists between the law office and claim centers. Maintains professional standards that deliver the highest level of customer service fostering loyalty from both clients and claim operations; and oversees compliance of jurisdictional State bar requirements by the attorneys. Provide effective leadership to ensure that the clients and claim customer services are met. Accountable for fostering a work environment within the Department that supports and motivates attorneys to develop expert technical and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to communicate expectations, goals, and deadlines in a professional and motivating way. Manage and coach performance to excellence; assist with implementation of new processes; be a liaison between the Claims department and the law office. Provides timely and accurate handling and evaluation of files in accordance with standards. Ensures files are being documented accurately and ensures compliance with standards. Ensures files are triaged/assigned appropriately to the appropriate skill set; promotes and encourages inclusive and diverse work environment and communicates the business unit’s vision, strategies and goals. Provides functional guidance to the worker’s compensation attorneys and claims.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree from accredited law school and license to practice in the state of California. Member in good standing of all state and federal bars where attorney has been admitted. 7-10 years law practice and/or business management experience in a large corporate environment. Trial experience handling complex civil litigation. Proven knowledge of litigation practices and procedures, the claims process, and management principles and practices. Proven leadership effectiveness and strong communication skills are critical. A consistent, proven, high level of performance and achievement. Demonstrated leadership ability. Ability to influence and communicate across all levels of the organization.
