Paralegal Specialist, GS 9 - 11 Responsibilities: The candidate will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing a variety of complex paralegal support services to Assistant United States Attorneys relating to bankruptcy, foreclosure and other litigation in which the United States has a security, lien, or other financial interest to be protected or enforced. Typical work assignments will include: Receiving, examining, and evaluating cases for litigation with reference to agency and United States Attorneys Office standards for case litigation worthiness. Preparing preliminary drafts of proposed orders, notices, and other documentation required to accomplish judgment, order, settlement, or resolution. Monitoring a large volume of pleadings, proofs of claim, and other related bankruptcy court filings. Participating in the development and implementation of procedures relating to bankruptcy, foreclosure and related litigation. Developing and reviewing various databases and automated tracking systems to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the overall litigation. Assisting in legal research and preliminary drafting of legal memoranda.
Qualification and Experience
Specialized Experience: Must have 1+ full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing paralegal or legal work which demonstrates a basic knowledge of legal research and the ability to provide a wide range of legal support services. Examples of specialized experience are: Providing assistance performing basic legal research in support of case work including research of case law and slip opinions, preparing legal documents necessary to commence judicial proceedings and subsequent motions; assist in preparing for presentation at court proceedings by compiling, organizing, and indexing various evidentiary exhibits; providing a variety of legal assistance and technical work requiring specialized knowledge of, and research into, the statutes, regulations, and evolving case law, and the applicable rules of court relevant to these areas of law, as well as proficiency with the electronic court filing systems involved.
Education: Should have one of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law): a Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.); Or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.
Specialized Experience: Should have 1+ full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing a variety of analytical paralegal or legal work which demonstrates a practical knowledge of law, the litigation and judicial process, and applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Examples of specialized experience are: Providing assistance to bankruptcy attorneys by performing specialized legal research in support of bankruptcy and foreclosure work, including research of legislative intent, controversial judicial precedents, case law, law review articles, and slip opinions; briefing bankruptcy attorneys prior to hearing by reviewing pertinent facts, issues, and case law.
Education: Should have one of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law): a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; Or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.M. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.
