Senior Legal Assistant, G7 The candidate will report to the Legal Officer in charge of the Legal Unit of the Treaty Section. Will analyse submissions and certifying statements of treaties and treaty actions for registration to ensure their conformity with Article 102 of the Charter and the Regulations adopted by the General Assembly. Oversee the input of information on treaties and treaty actions in the Treaty Section Information and Publication System (TIPS). Draft certificates of registration in English and in French. Liaise with Permanent Missions to ensure the completeness and legal accuracy of submissions for registration. Translate titles of treaties and international agreements into English and/or French. Submit treaties for translation to UN translation services (DGACM). Monitor and follow up on translations requested from UN translation services to ensure their timely delivery. Draft legal correspondence to Permanent Missions, in English and French, informing of the registration of treaties and treaty actions, and/or requesting additional information or clarifications regarding submissions. Ensure the electronic release of certificates of registration on the online United Nations Treaty Collection (UNTC). Prepare the Monthly Statement of Treaties and International Agreements Registered or Filed and Recorded with the Secretariat, and ensure its publication in the UNTC. Oversee the archiving of submissions and treaties in the Section and UN general archives and electronically in TIPS. Follow up on pending files by preparing draft notes to Permanent Missions and intergovernmental organizations. Supervise, train and provide guidance to more junior GS staff in the performance of depositary tasks. Using TIPS, manage the updating of information relating to the registration of treaties and treaty actions. Manage the posting of certificates of registration in the online UNTC. Ensure that information published in the Registration section of the online UNTC. Manages paper and electronic registration archives. Work independently and with minimal supervision, conducts legal research for the provision of legal advice by senior officers. Handle requests from Member States and intergovernmental organizations and other entities regarding the registration of treaties and treaty actions. Independently conduct paralegal research to respond to queries, including generating reports and producing documentation, and ensure the accuracy and precision of the information provided to Permanent Missions, other governmental authorities, intergovernmental organizations, etc.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have high school diploma or equivalent. Must have 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in law, paralegal, conference servicing, research work or related area. Experience working with treaties is desirable. Experience in administrative and general office support in an international organization is preferred. Experience with legal issues arising particularly in the area of treaty law and practice is an asset. Experience using document management software (e.g. Documentum) and basic office software (Word, Excel, Access, Lotus Notes, etc.) is a plus. Fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
